Makro – Breach of Consumer Protection Act, Faulty Product & Failure to Refund

In December 2025, I purchased a couch from Makro. Upon delivery, I discovered that the couch has no pre-drilled holes to attach the legs, making it impossible to assemble or use. This defect was not disclosed on Makro’s website at the time of purchase.

This constitutes misrepresentation and the supply of defective goods, in direct contravention of the Consumer Protection Act (CPA), specifically: • Section 41 (false, misleading or deceptive representations), and • Section 55 (right to receive goods that are safe, of good quality, and reasonably suitable for their intended purpose).

I logged a return. Makro confirmed that the couch would be collected on 31 December 2025. As of 9 January 2026, the couch has not been collected, and I have not received a refund.

This further violates the CPA, including: • Section 56, which entitles consumers to a refund for defective goods, and • Makro’s obligation to resolve returns within a reasonable time.

I am now left with a faulty, unusable couch, no collection, no refund, and no meaningful communication. This delay is unreasonable, unacceptable, and legally indefensible.

I expect immediate collection of the couch and full reimbur*****t without further delay. Should this matter not be resolved urgently, I will have no option but to escalate the complaint to the National Consumer Commission and pursue further remedies available under the CPA.

Makro’s handling of this matter reflects extremely poor service and a disregard for consumer rights.

Makro just tell the truth nothing has been done.
You made me to wait the hole day saying the courier company is coming to collect.
Call center agent by the name of Thobile just keep on lying saying she's escalating the matter. Nothing has done.

In December 2025, I purchased a couch from Makro. Upon delivery, I discovered that the couch has no pre-drilled holes to attach the legs, making it impossible to assemble or use. This critical defect was not disclosed on Makro’s website at the time of purchase.

This amounts to misrepresentation and the supply of defective goods, in direct contravention of the Consumer Protection Act (CPA), including:

  • Section 41 (false, misleading, or deceptive representations), and
  • Section 55 (right to receive goods that are of good quality and reasonably suitable for their intended purpose).
I logged a return, and Makro confirmed that the couch would be collected on 31 December 2025. As of 12 January 2026, the couch has still not been collected, and I have received no refund. This further violates the CPA, including:
  • Section 56, which entitles consumers to a refund for defective goods, and
  • Makro’s obligation to resolve returns within a reasonable time.
To make matters worse, this morning (12 January 2026) I called Makro and was explicitly promised that the couch would be collected today. Once again, no one arrived. When I called later to follow up, I was placed on hold for almost an hour, with no resolution, no accountability, and no clear communication. I am now left with a faulty, unusable couch, no collection, no refund, and repeated broken promises. This delay is unreasonable, unacceptable, and legally indefensible. I expect immediate collection of the couch and a full reimbur*****t without further delay. Failing urgent resolution, I will escalate this matter to the National Consumer Commission and pursue all remedies available under the CPA. Makro’s handling of this matter reflects extremely poor service and a clear disregard for consumer rights.
