Makro -********* behaviour by staff and management
Dear Sir
I am writing this review on behalf of my father who just turn 77 years old, who had a terrible and ********* experience at the Makro store in Cornubia in Durban.
My parents had to replace their TV due to a power surge that damaged their previous TV. As elderly retired people, my parent live alone and their TV is their main connection to the world and main form of entertained.
Therefore, the incident related below is so sad and despicable and more so since it is clear that an elderly person has been taken advantage of.
My father related the incident as follows: My name is Marimuthu Subramoney, who is also known as Subry Govender. I am a veteran struggle journalist and have been involved in the profession for more than 50 years.
On, December 20 2023, I went to the Makro company store at Cornubia in Durban to purchase a TV. While I was looking at some of the sets in the Multi Media Section, I was attracted to a Toshiba, Samsung and a Heinsen.
I called one of your salespersons and told him of what I was interested in. After some discussions he convinced me that the Toshiba should be my choice.
I decided to buy the Toshiba and he escorted me to the payment centre. Here he made me to sign a few documents and then to make the payment. I made a savings card payment of R5 219.00, which included an amount of R220.00 for TV licence.
Thereafter, the salesperson took me and my grandson to a point where he opened the box to show that there was nothing wrong with the TV screen. One of his colleagues also joined in and held the TV in his hands. Both of them talked to one another and they interacted in some conversation which I couldn’t understand.
The main salesperson then walked away. The second person then helped to place the TV back in the box. He then handed the box to us and we pushed the TV box to our car.
When we arrived at home, my grandson began connecting the TV to our network. But before we could get any pictures, my grandson pointed out that the TV was not working.
We then put the TV back in the box and drove back to Makro in Cornubia. We went back to the section where we purchased the TV and told a salesperson our problem. He said the salesperson who sold us the TV had gone for a break. He said we should take the TV to the returns section and speak to the manager in charge.
Here we explained our problem to the manager and he said they would have to peruse the CCTV footage to check the complaint. But I told the manager that I wanted a refund or a replacement.
But he insisted that they would have to check the CCTV footage.
He then walked into the store and after a while he came back with his senior manager, who he introduced to me.
The manager, who was dealing with my complaint, then showed us the CCTV footage and pointed out that the TV was shown to us before we took it away. He then, in a no care attitude, said he could not replace the TV set or refund my money.
My grandson and I then walked out. The TV set was left in the returns section.
I would like to call on you to ensure that either my refund is given or the TV set is replaced.
My father has received a negative and disappointing response from Makro, where they will not be replacing or refunding for supplying the faulty TV. Now my parents are without a TV because of this shocking behaviour of Makro. Makro cusomer service had the ordacity to indicate that "You may proceed to our returns department to collect the returned unit, if any case it is still with the Cornubia store", which further indicates the lack of customer service and customer care from Makro.
You are taking advantage of the elderly. I appeal to Makro as a good corporate citizen and in all good conscience to reconsider your response and do the right thing and turn this bad incident into something positive for both parties.
Thanks,
Kennedy Subramoney
