Defective equipment

I purchased a Mellerware steam iron from Makro 08/02/2014. It stopped heating up a few months later and they sent it in for repairs because i dont have the box.It was returned 2 weeks later, but with no report of fault or what was repaired. 27/01/2015 it was booked in again as it started smoking from inside. I explained my concerns to a manager at Makro
and he said i would have to deal with mellerware. I told him i am a Makro customer and purchased this iron from Makro. He provided me with mellerware details and that was it.I picked up the iron on 26/02/2015. This morning 17/02/2015, the iron stopped heating up again. I am extremely irritated as this appliance is needed for daily use and is obviously not even safe as it is very defective. Do i have no rights as a customer to expect the quality of product i paid for, all because of a box?
How often do i go back and forth with this iron?
Who will take responsibility if this iron ends up causing an incident or even electrical fire in my home?
This is ridiculous if i wanted such treatment i would have went to a cheaper store not a well renown establishment. I explained i would report them and was told the act protects them. Me???
