Racially Profiled by Real Estate Agent
Wendy van Wyk was referred to me by a colleague as I expressed interest in viewing a unit that is up for sale in his apartment building and she (Wendy) is the responsible agent. After speaking briefly on the phone about setting up an appointment to view in the following week, Wendy asked for my email address so she can send me information on the property. In her email she asked whether I had been preapproved so I know what I can and can't afford then referred me to someone (a bond originator) that could do a prequalification for me if I had not done one (this person was Cc'd in the email). The bond originator responded to the email (Wendy is now Cc'd) to say I should let her know if she can help. I didn't have a problem with this as I am aware it is standard practice, what is NOT standard however, is what followed. Wendy then replies to the email from the bond originator saying "Thanks [Name]. As you know I always feel we need to do this before showing clients that they cant afford." This made me LIVID! How does Wendy know what I can or cannot afford??? We have never met, I have never submitted a payslip or bank statement to her nor did we even DISCUSS affordability. I believe Wendy has a practice of profiling people and she, based on her own summations, will decide whether or not she will show units to an individual and those she believes cannot afford it, she takes through this bond origination process to "prove herself right" so she won't have to do her job. I don't believe she meant for me to see the email. She probably forgot NOT to click "reply all" but alas, she did and now her prejudicial practices have been exposed.
