Extremely Disappointing Fireplace Installation Experience

I am a Level 6 Local Guide on Google with over 150 reviews written over 12 years, and I take fairness seriously when leaving feedback—both positive and negative. Unfortunately, our experience with Lourens Wurz Projects has been extremely disappointing.

We were referred to the company by Eurafrican when looking to replace our ageing fireplace. Lourens declined a site visit and instead quoted based on a description and images we provided. The installation was meant to be straightforward.

Soon after the installation, water and black residue leaked down the wall onto the brand-new fireplace during a rainstorm. The installer returned and spray-painted over the damage, which did not address the underlying issue. After waiting the advised 48 hours, we lit a fire. Thick black liquid dripped from the flue, and the room filled with smoke and a strong, unpleasant chemical smell that made the space uninhabitable.

Following this, communication deteriorated significantly. We received conflicting information and were issued new quotes instead of receiving a resolution. The installer later stated that a warranty would only be issued if we replaced the flue kit—despite him previously stating the existing one was suitable.

Due to serious concerns about safety and quality, we’ve had two independent professional fireplace companies assess the work. Based on their evaluations, we have been advised that several aspects of the installation are not up to standard—including incorrect flue orientation, unsuitable waterproofing, and materials that may not be safe for high-heat applications.

We are now in a position where we do not feel safe using the fireplace, and we will need to have much of the work redone at additional cost.
