No luck in cancelling

I tend to judge companies on how easy/difficult it is to cancel service. In general, companies that deliver excellent service make it simple to cancel, since they know it is a small risk, and chances are clients will come back. On the other hand, companies that make it almost impossible to cancel generally do this since their business model is based around making it easy to sign up, but difficult to leave (at least, this is my humble opionion and experience in the matter).

I am having major issues cancelling my contract with Lipco/Law For All. Indeed, this has been an ongoing battle, and i am getting no closer to resolution. I am posting my complaint in a more public forum, since it seems that this is one of the very few places they respond.

Brief summary:

I spoke to a consultant last year to cancel (the called me - i can't remember exactly why - but it was related to either expanding my policy, or updating it or something similar), and they promised they would send me details on how to do this. I never received a mail back.

A few months later, (the original cancellation wasn't under severe time constraints, hence the passage of time) I called them - requested cancellation. Promised they would send me a mail with details. No reply (ps, i have checked my spam and junk mail folders as well - nothing there).

Then, 2 weeks ago (on 8 June) i phoned to cancel (again) - this time things had become more urgent, since i had changed bank details. They promised me a mail (stop me if this is starting to sound fami**** - almost like this is by design perhaps (in my humble opinion) as oppsed to oversight). I requested they send the mail, but also requested that they give me the process to cancel over the phone, since i have never (not once) received this holy grail of mails. I was instructed to send a mail to ********** I have. No response received on my mail, no receipt of the promised mail from them. When i asked what their turnaround time would be, i was informed that someone would respond to me within 2 business days.

Followed up by mail on 12 June - no response.

Phoned (again) on the 15'th of June - spoke to Gloria. She requested i forward the request for cancellation mail directly to her. Done. No response.

Mailed a few minutes ago to get a status update, not going to hold my breath for a response.

In changing bank details, i did a cleanup on some policies that i don't use anymore, and I had to update bank details at a number of institutions. All of them, apart from Law For All have responded and completed processing within a few days. Law For All is in essence holding me hostage by not allowing me to cancel, meaning that not only am i forced to continue paying them a service fee, but in addition i have to leave the bank account in question open (and pay for this account) for a single debit order (Just realised i should maybe close the bank account regardless - I'm sure i'll hear from Law For All minutes after their debit order fails).

Please can this issue be investigated urgently!

Reviewer Update

As upset as i was when i wrote the original mail, i have to say that Lipco has turned around on the above in record time. An hour after posting my review i received a call to apologize, as well as confirmation that the matter will be investigated further, and that cancellation has been actioned with immediate effect. Thanks to the lady from the complains department that phoned me for the profesional way in which this issue has been dealt (unfortunately i have mislaid her name - i am changing my review to 3 stars (neutral) because of the expedient way in which the issue was resolved following my post above - however, the issue should ideally not have occured in the first place).

Hi Steyn,

Absolutely. Cancelling should be as simple as signing up, and that's always our aim. We are looking into what caused this delay. Again, sorry for the inconvenience. Should you need to get in touch with us at any point, don't hesitate to call us on ***.
