Unfair return Policy

I Have received a Gift pack from my fiancé on my birthday, He at the time of purchasing the hamper didn't take into account me being diabetic and being on a strict diet. We decided to call the next day and ask if we could please return the hamper as it was worth over R700 and these chocolates will have to be thrown away or given away with it been less than 24 hours of purchase the hamper was in the exact same packaging as received from the shop, We have called and asked Lindt Pavilion Durban if we could please return this as it will be money wasted if we keep it , the shop assistant was quiet helpful and escalated the query upon giving me a call within 3 hours she advised that the manager refused to consider the return as it will be a health hazard. I really don't understand how this will be a health Hazard as it was not opened it was in the exact same packaging as the shop sold it to us and it was less than 24 hours. I find this really disappointing coming from a international retailer and explaining my health reasons for the return. Now the hamper worth R700 had to be given away.
