Abusive Staff at Sandton Licensing Dept - Drunk on Power

Despite a JMPD officer manning the enquiries desk she was rude and refused to answer simple questions from myself and other customers. In addition, we were not allowed to wait for our children in the waiting area – but were shouted at and told to go outside or “wait in the car”. This is entirely unacceptable as we are the parents and guardians of our children who are still minors.

In addition we arrived early, but it took over and hour for my son’s eye test document to be signed so that we could pay. (He had done his eye test the day before) With four minutes to go before the learners’ test was to start the cashier would not process the payment because I was standing next to my son. I asked why? This is my child and I would have to pay by credit card and insert my PIN.

The gentleman refused to process the transaction as long as I was in the room. He would not give his name and claimed he did not have a manager when I asked for one. I was in no way impeding him from doing his job, as all he had to do was process the transaction. He refused to give a reason as to why I could not be with my child, leaving me to assume that he was merely abusing his position of power, and thus failing in his duties as a public servant.

Two other parents were also forced out with no explanation.

Thus, I must ask:

• Is it City of Johannesburg policy that parents must wait outside in the parking lot (and not use the waiting area – which is clearly signed). • And must minors be left unattended without the parents in payments must be processed? Even if requires the parent to make the payment.

The rude JMPD officer then shoved and pushed me several times to “go outside” when I asked to see a manager and questioned why I could not accompany my son while making payment.

Disgraceful.
