Before you buy an LG OLED TV - it won't last long due to known issues and LG doesn't care

Before buying a very expensive OLED TV from LG South Africa, be aware that the 2 year guarantee just about gets you to the point where the screens start showing up with serious problems (not burn-in) – and LG won’t assist you as they do in other countries where they do out of warranty screen repairs and swops for issues such as these - at no cost.

And emailing the Office of the CEO off LG’s site to log a complaint doesn’t help. You will be directed to a local "Service Director" who is from Asia and hardly speaks English, and who will deflect your argument and deny any evidence that you offer for the problem (including links to many Internet forums where customers prove that the problem exists in many OLED screens and gets assistance and care from LG in their countries). He will then offer a repair at a cost that’s basically the same as the cost of a new TV when all costs and VAT are included. Or he will offer a discount on a new TV, but by this time you will no longer trust LG South Africa any longer. And finally he will tell you that the problem you are experiencing is within factory specification (because a great big bright green cloud on a yellow screen is absolutely perfect – and it makes actors’ faces appear green too). He will do this without ever sending a technician to actually check the screen and confirm the problem.

In other countries, LG sends tech teams to check and replace OLED screens – even those with burn in – and even when they are 2 and even 3 years out of warranty!

Thanks LG – continue to use our consumer laws against us. Your promise for OLED screens is 100 000 hours, and many aren’t even making it past 5 000 hours! I can’t even gift the screen to anyone – it’s that bad. I am stuck with a R30 000 paperweight, and the chances are pretty high that your LG OLED will become a paperweight too just when you least expect it.

LG South Africa – this is not good corporate citizenship, or responsible business. In other countries, courtesy and care builds life long relationships with customers. In South Africa ... I'll never buy LG again and do all I can to warn others.
