In connection with lease agreement
I have had an uneasy relationship with the agents The Letting People Roodepoort formerly Just Letting Roodepoort. From the beginning they have been unhelpful and insensitive to my views as a tenant. When I have argued to claim my rights they have claimed that I was abusive to them. Yesterday I set up a meeting with the directors to inform them about outstanding maintenance issues and a dysfunctional business relationship they were unsympathetic to my issues, patronising and rude to me, particularly the director who also happens to be the owner of the property Jacques Erasmus. In that meeting he told me that if the relationship was dysfunctional then I must terminate the lease agreement and 'stop wasting his time'. Today I've given notice to leave the property at the end of the month and they've written back to say I owe them R4293.49 in cancellation penalties. I've contested this charge as being irrational and arbitrary as the suggestion to cancel the lease came from them and not from me. Their business dealing with customers is brash and aimed at making the customer suffer financial loss at every given point in time. From the outset of the rental agreement the tenant has had unrealistic expectations of the landlord and the agency. How you get your furniture into the property, up stairs is not the concern of the owner or the agency nor is there anything anyone can do about birds sitting on the roof. Our female staff members had keys thrown at her and was verbally abused by the tenant within days of occupation by the tenant. As a result, she, fearing for her safety, could not carry out her job and had to go back escorted by a male. During the meeting, after being lectured on how we should be running the business (10 years experience notwithstanding) it became evident the tenant had no specific complaint and had exceeded the time allocated to the meeting, the tenant was INFORMED that if he was not happy with the property or the service it was his right to terminate the lease agreement early n terms of the law. It was not suggestion! In terms of the LAW, should any person terminate a fixed term agreement a cancellation fee is payable. It is agreed matters got heated and the meeting was cut short. I am glad to report that the matter was settled between owner and tenant amicably a few days later
