Lancet is shadey
Horrible encounter with Lancet clinic.I went to see a doctor a few weeks ago-25th August 2021- and they sent me to the Lancet for analysis of samples .The lab also drew blood for some of the tests. The doctor explained what these two tests were and the lab confirmed. I do not have medical aid and paid cash -over R3000. On 14th September ,I received an sms from Lancet stating that I owe an additional amount of R1584. I phoned the lab and was told that the doctor requested additional tests and that I am liable for the amount. I told the lab that ; 1. The doctor never consulted /informed me 2 . Never gave me the opportunity to choose whether or not to accept this quote 3.I have nothing in writing to verify this transaction and certainly nothing that was share with me as the patient/client. 4. That if I had been given the choice and been engaged transparently, I may have chosen NOT to pursue the further tests given the cost implications. I do not have medical aid so all these procedures are paid out of pocket. 5. I find it deeply disturbing and ********* for any procedure to be conducted without me knowledge or my permission and then be saddled with a bill. I also take issue with the bullying and harassment by Lancet who insist that the doctor is within her rights. There are many problems in this instance including the paternalistic approach that the doctor took by ordering tests without my permission or knowledge. The medical profession relies on truth telling , disclosure and ethics to ensure that trust is maintained. Lancet is disgracefully enabling this ********* , non transparent ,high handed behaviour.
