Tasty? Yes. Refried? Not even close

I read the menu online and was very excited to try this restaurant. I grew up eating Mexican food prepared and served by Mexicans so when I read the menu, which read authentically, I couldn’t wait. Boy, was I disappointed.

The food wasn’t bad but it wasn’t Mexican. It was the usual *******ized version I’ve come to expect in Durban. What a disappointment.

I had my heart set on refried beans but shortly after arriving and asking a few questions, I decided I’d better request a sampling before committing. There was nothing refried about it. It was chili without meat with a slight hint of Currie.

Tasty? Yes. Refried ? Not even close.

We queried the waiter who explained they had to change things because the local palette wouldn’t appreciate genuine refried beans. I know better. Folks have raved over my wife’s refried beans,

I’m hoping this is nothing but a lazy short cut and better heads will respond to this review by changing things up.

One other issue. In genuine Mexican restaurants, chips and salsa are all-you-can-eat. You don’t pay extra, they come with every meal. It’s automatic. At La Rosa, I couldn’t even order just a basket of chips. It had to be one of the set items on the menu.

And one other issue. Not every dish has to be laced with jalapeño peppers. Jalapeños are seasoning, not the main course.

On a positive note, the atmosphere was good and the service went well. If they could just get a little more Mexican into food.
