Worst paid for experience of my life!
Our anniversary weekend is something we look forward to as it is pretty much the only time we can get away. My mother recommended going to Magaliesburg as it is not too far out of the way as I was working on the Saturday 30 April with a wedding. When dealing with Marguerite she got back to me quickly, until it came time to receive a picture of the room in question. This took somewhat longer. The picture sent was to her account the only one she has dated November 2007. Her response was; "Don’t have any of inside – BEDROOM EN SUITE downstairs and lounge & deck upstairs!" Well we soon realised why it is that she doesn't have pictures of this room since 2007. It is filthy, dark and rundown. I was sent other promotional pictures of the cottages in question, which are indeed very misleading. I attach all sent as well as mine taken, which show a very different picture! When asking for an invoice I was told they do not do invoices and I just need to pay R3000. To which I paid the amount and got back to my planning for the upcoming wedding décor. (I attach the screen shot of the conversations) On arrival on the Saturday we were met with Jeremiah. He is lovely and showed us around the place of where we would eat our picnic basket. I was a little confused as we kept going into the place called Le Provence d'Afrique and we specifically discussed out of Africa, but nonetheless, we wanted to get unpacked and start winding down. We received a note from Marguerite with an anniversary message which we noted to be thoughtful. We got dressed in the dark room and decided to go outside our room to the area where everyone sits as apposed to sitting on our balcony as everyone sits and faces our balcony. The people were watching us arrive and unpack our car. We got some wine and played Rumicub. We asked Jeremiah for some snacks as I had not eaten all day. He said no he doesn't want to spoil our dinner. We then waited another hour to eat. Sitting in the alley way, which has no music except at the entrance which is quote someway away with a closed door and a fountain drowning it out. We were given a basket which was our 3 course meal. This consisted of a soup and a mini loaf or roll, chicken pie, dry rice and sugar vegetables. There were no other options should you have dietary requirements. That was it. You had to pack away your dirty plates into the basket as there is no service until you are finished. We were sitting so close to another couple they could hear everything we were saying. Thus our conversation came to a screaming halt. I told my husband we should just get out of there and rather go to our room. We too our malva pudding which had messed everywhere from the way it was packed, back to the room. Not thrilled with this first experience, I wanted to have a bath. It was filthy. Dark hair and dirt in the bath is what greeted me. I then was so unhappy I decided to message Marguerite again to let her know of my experience. This message also in the pictures. While I am busy messaging her, the noise from the people staying next to us was so terrible I was really unhappy with this. Especially for the amount of money I am paying to sleep in a backpackers style room. We go to sleep and wake up on our anniversary morning by the incessant noise above us, but make tea and wash the bath and start our day. As it is our anniversary we want to have a positive attitude and head down for breakfast. Still having heard nothing from the owner, Marguerite, whom on her own voicemail is ALWAYS available. We get a basket for breakfast which is by all accounts, SHOCKING! it consists of 2 hard boiled eggs (no inquiry as to how we would like them done) 4 ****tail sausages, 2 cherry tomatoes and lettuce. This for 2 all in the Pyrex dish. Some toast, 2 scones and 1 bran ****in. Salt, pepper, butter and jam and tinned fruit in a consol jar with syrup. 1 plate and 2 trays with the knives and forks. This once again for TWO people. At this point we asked for some bubbles because we are actually so flabbergasted. Picture attached. We mention to Jeremiah, when he mentions this bottle is on the house that he is the only thing of this stay worth mentioning because it is terrible. We then go for our massage as we just want to persevere. The ladies are lovely, they however need more training. The environment also needs to be addressed as it is cold and not cozy and peaceful. The massage was rushed and after having told Gloria that my back is sore twice it was just inexperience that made me walk out with a t******* head ache and sore neck. As I mentioned to Marguerite (which she did not take well at all) all they need is more training as they are lovely ladies which try hard. I walked out crying because this weekend is a disaster. My husband said lets get out of here for the day. We then salvaged our day by being away from this establishment until after dinner at another place close by. Returning back to once again, loud floors and even hearing the other patrons talking. We woke up in better spirits because of our wonderful dinner elsewhere. My husband just wanted to leave but I insisted we go to breakfast as we had paid for this and I wanted to see what is happening this time. As in the information sent it clearly states; "PACKAGES inclusive of one delicious dinner baskets served in Main manor house or the French Street café' with large fireplaces Our lovely old 1929 CHEF truck PUB on DUTY with all kinds of drinks available on request-- ,2 brunch breakfasts INCLUDED and 2 full body stone therapy massages at our ZEN SPA . Breakfasts are served from 9/11 down by the river-- beautiful setting in the winter sun. Venues very different on same property and same packages." We were greeted with an entirely different scene. There were place settings, condiments, blankets etc. (photo once again attached) Our immediate comments were; "the owners must be here". And they were. Eventually Marguerite came to introduce herself, to which I asked why she had not got back to me with my concerns. Her answer was; she thought we had left already. Shocked, I said well as the owners I would have thought you would get back to me as this is my anniversary weekend. She rep**** with, it is their first weekend away in a log time so she put her phone away and there was nothing she could do for me anyway. I asked if she has had complaints about this room before as there cannot be anyway that someone pays that amount for this offering, including the food given which is not worth it. All she kept saying is that everyone else loved it and in this industry you get difficult people. "different strokes for different folks", was also mentioned quite a few times. When I told her the bath was filthy she first said that is impossible and then said why didn't I get hold of Jeremiah. I already mentioned that I got hold of her but this is something that should be cleaned before we arrive. She is getting very worked up at states that I need to work with her, do I check every bathroom at our establishment? When telling her I was not happy with the passage where we were seated. She then says, "Obviously you have never been to France". I rep**** that I had not, but I also didn't book to go to France I booked at Out of Africa, not even La Provence. She was offended that I was not happy sitting there. This sparked heated testaments from her of everyone loving it and them running their venue for 40 years and it is impossible that I did not like it. I told her of my experience with the massage which had her even more worked up as if I was insulting her personally. Her response was that it is impossible that I walked out in pain. I had to just laugh at that as this was not getting ridiculous. My husband then concurred but this was not satisfying for Marguerite. She said they have been doing it for 16 years and that they have never received a complaint. Apparently not even when I was telling her. At this point her husband Charles storms over shouting at my husband and me. He started saying that "someone like me" - with hand gesture showing up and down, has a lot to say but no respect and their weekend away at Kloofsight... I stopped him there and asked what "someone like me" is, and then let him know that I don't need to know of their weekend away as I am trying to sort out mine. I also enquired as to what I should be respecting when I am a paying customer like everyone else but I have just not had a good experience and wanted to let them know out of respect before I post a review. This did nothing and in fact made him more aggressive towards us. To a point that Marguerite started chasing him away. I was concerned and started recording them as I could see the kind of people we were dealing with. They both stated that they don't want my money and would in fact pay me back all of it because they don't want it (all on video), because I said I am a paying patron. When I then was fed up and told Marguerite about the previous days breakfast and the difference between what we are experiencing, she said it is too much effort to put everything out each time which is why they do one basket and one served breakfast. This is not in the correspondence! And was too shocking to even delve into. We were told to pay EFT and go. We did not even receive our final breakfast. Marguerite today will not pay the money back for that shocking experience as well as being berated by them in front of other patrons, simply for not having a good experience and voicing our opinion about it. Yet she is adamant she wants to speak to my Mother; Good morning TENEALE, AS I told your husband—you can keep the R1,140 still outstanding to make up for any inconvenience but I am not refunding your whole weekend. Luckily for us you spoke so loud that the couple sitting next to you also heard every word said and sent me a message to say they will lookout on social media and co-write their experience, as will some other guests. I apologised and offered to let you keep the outstanding amount. We also gave you a bottle of our best champagne for your anniversary. As mentioned I would like to speak to your Mom, please send me her number? WARM REGARDS, Marguerite Gotthard. No accountability but okay to take my money, even when she simply "thought I had left". I have never in my life experienced something so disgusting in hospitality. I would NEVER recommend going there, and my Mother who recommended we do is sorry for ever doing so after hearing and seeing our experience
