I am writing with a heavy heart to express my profound disappointment and concern regarding the current state of Hluhluwe/Imfolozi Game Park. As one of South Africa's most treasured conservation areas and a destination renowned for its rich biodiversity, breathtaking landscapes, and historical significance, it is deeply saddening to witness the apparent decline in its maintenance and overall condition. Over the years, this Game Park has been a source of pride for both local and international visitors. It has showcased the beauty of our natural heritage and played a significant role in conservation and tourism. Unfortunately, recent visits have revealed a park that appears to be suffering from a lack of adequate maintenance, particularly in relation to its infrastructure. The condition of many of the roads within the park has deteriorated significantly. Numerous sections are heavily potholed, and difficult to navigate, diminishing the visitor experience. While visitors to a game reserve understand that roads are not intended to resemble city streets, there is a reasonable expectation that they will be maintained to a standard that allows safe and comfortable travel throughout the park. Equally concerning is the condition of the camps and visitor facilities. Accommodation and communal areas that should provide guests with comfort and a memorable experience appear neglected in several respects. Signs of deferred maintenance, ageing infrastructure, and a general lack of upkeep detract from what should be a world-class destination. These facilities represent the first and last impressions many visitors have of the park, making their condition especially important. The current condition of the Mpila and Hilltop camps is a significant concern from both a visitor experience and tourism sustainability perspective. These camps are among the flagship accommodation facilities within the park, yet their apparent lack of maintenance creates a negative impression for both domestic and international visitors. At Hilltop Camp, the swimming pool area appears neglected, with visible black algae indicating inadequate maintenance and hygiene standards. As a central recreational facility, particularly during warmer months, the poor condition of the pool detracts from the overall guest experience and raises concerns about health, safety, and the park's commitment to maintaining its tourism infrastructure. Similarly, the tented accommodation at Mpila Camp has reportedly remained unused for a noticeable amount of time, with renovations only expected to be finished by the end of 2026. Tented camps are a key attraction, offering visitors a unique bush experience. Allowing these facilities to deteriorate and become unavailable for such a length of time reduces profit potential and visitor offerings. Also concerning is the level of customer service. Visitors have reported that staff are often unhelpful and dismissive when concerns are raised. Positive interactions with staff play a crucial role in shaping a visitor's overall experience. A lack of responsiveness and professionalism can leave guests feeling undervalued and discourage repeat visits or positive recommendations. The consequences of this decline extend far beyond aesthetics. Tourism is one of the most important contributors to both the local and national economy, supporting jobs, surrounding communities, conservation initiatives, and countless small businesses. Visitors who leave disappointed are less likely to return and may share negative experiences with friends, family, and through online reviews. In today's digital world, the reputation of a destination can be significantly influenced by visitor feedback, and rebuilding that reputation can take years. Perhaps most concerning is the message that neglect sends about our commitment to conservation. Hluhluwe/Imfolozi is not merely a tourist attraction; it is a symbol of South Africa's conservation legacy and an irreplaceable sanctuary for wildlife. Allowing its infrastructure to deteriorate risks undermining the extraordinary conservation work that has been achieved over decades. This letter is not written simply as criticism but as an earnest appeal from someone who genuinely cares about the future of this remarkable park. It is heartbreaking to see a place with such immense natural beauty and historical importance falling short of the standards it once represented. Hluhluwe/Imfolozi deserves to be preserved not only for the wildlife it protects but also for future generations who should have the opportunity to experience it at its very best. I respectfully urge the relevant authorities to prioritise the maintenance of the park's roads, camps, and visitor facilities through a comprehensive programme of repairs and ongoing upkeep. Investing in these improvements will enhance visitor satisfaction, strengthen tourism, support local livelihoods, and reinforce South Africa's reputation as a leading eco-tourism destination. I sincerely hope that this letter will be received in the constructive spirit in which it is intended. My greatest wish is to see this beautiful Game Park restored to the exceptional standard that it deserves, ensuring that it continues to inspire awe and pride in everyone fortunate enough to visit.
