Kulula nail passengers with extra costs.
I flew Kulula Airlines from Cape Town to Johannesburg on the 24th of June. I am a fairly regular air-traveler, even though I am still a student. <br> <br> When I do travel, I don't discriminate amongst the different airlines, but simply choose the cheapest flight. This time round was no different. <br> <br> Every time I travel I take a golf bag with me. In recent times I have flown with Mango Airlines. I receive no extra charge for my golf bag, so long as I am under the 20kgs weight limit. However, with Kulula this is very different. <br> <br> Kulula's weight limit is likewise 20kgs, however they impose a single piece of luggage policy. Meaning you may only take 1 piece of luggage with your flight. My clothes bag weighed 9kgs and I made a special effort to keep my golf bag to the same weight of 9kgs. This however was in vain.<br> <br> Upon checking in, I was informed of the policy and was told to go and purchase an 'extra baggage ticket' for R350. This was an absolute outrage and a slap in the face to me, as I had paid a mere R580 for the flight. This was more than half the flight to fly 9kgs of baggage to JHB. Disgraceful. I could have couriered my bag overnight for less. <br> <br> Thanks Kulula, but never ever again.<br>

With increased fuel charges and associated costs in carriage of baggage it has been necessary for us to review how we best manage this in relation to how we improve efficiency in our business and provide a good customer proposition at the same time . When customers purchase a flight , the ticket includes a seat plus the 'free checked baggage' allowance . Any additional value that the customer prefers in addition to this has a cost association which must be borne by the customer.
The weight is not the only issue, as the handling companies charge the airlines for every piece handled, and we also pay for the number of staff required to load the aircraft, which is also affected by the number of pieces of luggage. I know it is not good news, but it is one of the reasons why over the past 12 years the average Comair fare has only increased marginally . Our current policy imposes a fee for an additional bag which at our counters is R350. If any one item of baggage exceeds 20kgs, a heavy bag fee is imposed on it which is R250.00 .
