JUST DON'T CARE
My daughter was travelling with a 2 year old toddler who she paid a full fare for. She travelled from Durban with one suitcase to make things easier . But returning today to Durban from Lanseria she was 8 kg over the 20 kg free bag allowance. By calculation she had 40kg free but because she only carried one bag she was not intitled to the childs 20kg allowance. She was asked to pay for the access. luckily she had very little other baggage and was able to take the excess on board as hand luggage, something she had tried to avoid because she was travelling with a toddler ( seems KULULA thinks this is an easy task !! )<br> To top it all the plane was not at all busy!!! So thanks Kulula Lanseria for enforcing your luggage policy on a Mom and child and just making it that much harder for them. WELL DONE !! for having no foresight or compassion. You just stick to your rules.
Historically the average cost that the airlines have to pay for handling baggage was included in every ticket, so effectively customers with no baggage subsidized those with baggage that was checked in. As ticket prices have risen due to various external elements we have had to find ways to keep our ticket prices reasonable in the market in order to try and stop the total market of travellers from shrinking. One way has been to stop the cross subsidization, so now customers bringing the extra baggage are the ones who pay for it.
The weight is not the only issue, as the handling companies charge the airlines for every piece handled, and we also pay for the number of staff required to load the aircraft, which is also affected by the number of pieces of luggage. With the policy that we introduced in 2011, the pooling of customers weight is no longer allowed. Each traveller is given 1 check in bag at 20kgs which they can check in for the flight. I have shared your valued feedback with both our polices team as well as our airport managers team to see how they can be more accommodating going forward.
Yours Sincerely,
Nazley - CR
