First and last time ripping customers off
I booked a flight with this airline for the 1st time. I check the baggage it gave me 23kg. My son had two small bags on his return to varsity making up the baggage total. We were refuse a second bag and was told he can make it lighter to 7kg to be taken on as hand luggage or pay R350 to booked it in. This is really ripping customers off as we were not the only people that have to pay. What is the difference having a huge suitcase weighing 23kg and two small ones. I have never experience such treatment at any of the other airlines and will in future stick to the airlines I know as this is cheaper airline however it was more expensive than other airline. Especially for a students

The average cost that the airlines have to pay for handling baggage was included in every ticket, so customers with no baggage subsidized those with baggage. As ticket prices have risen due to external elements we have had to find ways to keep our ticket prices reasonable in order to stop the total market of travellers from shrinking. One way has been to stop the cross subsidization, so now customers with extra baggage are the ones who pay for it. This was app**** in the USA and EU about 5 years ago - SA is just slow to catch up, but SAA and Mango are now also amending their policies to the same in order to keep competitive cheap fares in the market. The weight is not the only issue, as the handling companies charge the airlines for every piece handled, and we also pay for the number of staff required to load the aircraft. This is one of the reasons why over the past 12 years the average Comair fare (BA + kulula) has only increased 14% while inflation has increased 98%. Our current policy imposes a fee for an additional bag which at our counters is R350 and R245 online. If any one item of baggage exceeds 20kgs, a heavy bag fee is imposed on the heavy piece.
