2 persons traveling under same surname
Myself and my wife traveled from Lanseria airport with a Kulula flight. When we checked in our 1 bag for the both of us it was overweight by 6kg. We had to pay in R300. The airline alows 20kg per person which add up to 40kg for the both of us. Ours together only added up to 26kg. Upon futher investigation Mango airlines would have allowed it because we travel under the same surname. In the future I will only make use of MANGO.

The cost that the airlines have to pay for handling baggage was included in every ticket, so customers with no baggage subsidized those with baggage. As ticket prices have risen we have had to find ways to keep our ticket prices reasonable in order to stop the total market of travellers from shrinking. One way has been to stop the cross subsidization, so now customers with extra baggage are the ones who pay for it. This was app**** in the USA and EU about 5 years ago - SA is just slow to catch up, but other airlines also amending their policies in order to keep competitive cheap fares in the market. The weight is not the only issue, as the handling companies charge the airlines for every piece handled, and we also pay for the number of staff required to load the aircraft. This is one of the reasons why over the past 12 years the average Comair fare (BA + kulula) has only increased 14% while inflation has increased 98%. Our current policy imposes a fee for an additional bag and a heavy bag fee. Baggage may not be combined between travellers.
