STUDENT ACCOMMODATION OR IMMORAL MONEY POT?

As someone who has spent quite a number of years as a customer/resident, I have come to realize a number of issue with the establishment. Issues that people considering Kovacs as a place of residence may need to consider for the sake of their well-being. These include:

1. Staffing issues( eg assault/ **** allegations and theft by memebers of staff hidden by management) 2. Invasion of privacy. (eg security with master key of all rooms can enter “when needed”. Even when you’re in the shower or sleeping.) 3. Blurred lines of Kovacs as a “private accommodation” or a residence of the University of the Western Cape. This means they can choose to act in accordance to university mandate whenever it sees fit leading to high levels of bureaucracy.

As I write, I have been made effectively homeless and relying on charity to get by. This as a result of their forced evacuation of residents after the announcement of the Covid-19 lockdown. Despite a lease agreement and my years of loyalty, I have been offered no reimbur*****t to help finance my circumstance. Nor have I been offered assistance with alternative accommodation. I was rather met with shrugs when informed of potential homelessness and refusal to enter my place of residence.

I advise parents to be weary of sending their kids here. I advise kids to be weary of the deceptive appearance. To me it is but a glorified prison where students struggle with intense depression, lack of care from management and drug and alcohol abuse within the residence that is not conducive to fruitful llearning. As a woman, I have also found that safety is a big concern. I will leave it at that. .... Hopefully this review will spur the establishment to start making some changes and not reduce its residents to numbers. As it stands I have no place to stay and my lease is nearly over yet I am still forced to pay my expensive monthly fees which is inclusive of uncapped internet that I am not using. This with no signs of reimbur*****t but yet I still need to hustle to sustain myself and my academic career. The saddest part is that I AM NOT ALONE and my story is but the tip of the ice berg.
