appalling mistreatment, lack of treatment and total disrespect of patient rights
My mother was admitted to Kiaat Hospital, Short stay ward and was treated under Dr.SA Sikhosana. I will give a description below. 04/01/2020 My mother was admitted to the Day Ward after being referred by her house doctor . The house doctor sent a referral letter to the hospital that contained vital information regarding my mother’s treatment. I phoned to find out how my mom is doing. The reply was ‘fine’. I asked SR. Seema if they received the referral letter as my mother is very sick. Her answer was that she does not know, she will check and phone me back, I gave SrR Seema my celphone number and asked her to relay a message to the doctor to please phone me – I received no phone call from the doctor or Sr Seema. 05/01/2020 I phoned the ward again to enquire about my mother’s condition. The only information I received was that she is confused. I then once again asked if they received the referral letter as my mother is going through detox. Once again I was told they would check and let me know. I then again requested the doctor phone me. Sr Seema then said that should I need any information on my mother I should ask her son Dennis. I then made it very clear that I am my mother’s only daughter and that they are giving information to a non-relation and to cease immediately. Needless to say I was ignored and the doctor did not phone me. 06/01/2019 The same procedure as above. My step ****her and my son drove through to the hospital. When they arrived at the hospital my mother was sleeping (the nurses stated that she has been sedated). They were then informed that doctor has not come yet, and they don’t think he will come as he is off after having to work over Christmas. The 7 hour trip was a total waste of time and we were still not awae of what was going on. 07/01/2019 After phone calls again and asking the doctor to phone me- once again not receiving feedback or a call from the doctor. 08/01/2019 My cousin drove through to the hospital and insisted on seeing the doctor. The nurses informed him that they do not know when or if the doctor would come. My cousin then told them that he will sit and wait there until the doctor arrives. The doctor eventually arrived. My cousin stated that we want to transfer my mother to another hospital. The doctor then for the first time told us that no, my mother has a bacterial infection and she is getting IV antibiotics- she can be released on Friday. My cousin then asked if the doctor received the referral letter from the housedoctor and was he aware that my mom was going through withdrawels. The doctor then said that he received NO referral letter and he was not aware my mom was going through withdrawels. It is hereby very clear that Sr Seema did not relay any of my messages to the doctor. 10/01/2019 My cousin went to the hospital to pick up my mom. He was given a envelope with lab results- as he told them he will be taking her to another hospital for admission. The lab results did not belong to my mother as you can see below. My cousin also noted that there were restraints hanging on my mom’s hospital bed. After discharge my mom complained that she has excruciating pain in her ribs and she has difficulty breathing. My mother was admitted to another hospital with BROKEN RIBS, difficulty breathing, bruises on her arms and lower legs from the restraints wit open wounds, that the doctor assumes she got from falling. (my mom is currently still admitted in hospital) As we received absolutely no feedback from the hospital we can only assume my mother’s ribs were broken when she was incorrectly restrained. My mom said she continuously reported that she has got pain – the nursing staff at Kiaat hospital just ignored her. I want to en off by saying that I am hugely disappointed in the service received from Kiaat PRIVATE hospital and that the staff can be very lucky my mother was not fatally injured due to their abuse and incorrect treatment. I myself have got my nursing training- and I can tell you that the patient care is seriously lacking and unprofessional. And by the spiteful treatment I received, it was not me that was negatively affected, but my mother the patient. The nursing staff should seriously have a relook at the oath they took. I am eagerly awaiting a reply- apology. I do not want excuses for the absolute appalling treatment my mom received. I am sure that if this was the treatment your parent received- you would also find it unacceptable.
