BEWARE OF K & F MOVERS !!!!

We have a home in the Boksburg area and as I had recently retired, we wanted to move the home contents back to Cape Town. I went on to the Internet and through a website called Get a Quotation.co.za. I requested a quotation from their pool of movers. The first responder was K&F Removals. Their representative Peter came to the house and did a good job of selling the company and their service to us. The rest of the respondents from that website were pretty indifferent. A good selling job, quick response and false assurances by Peter, led us to believe we were in good hands and as time was a factor we decided to go with their offering. The quote came to 16 500 for the move and I duly paid a R8 250 to secure the move. So far so good. We packed and prepared to move on the date given to us in writing by Peter from K&F Removals.

It was then that our problems began. Below is a short version of what transpired.

* Having transferred the R 8 250.00 into their bank account, Peter came back with email confirmation that the moving truck would be at our Boksburg address on Friday morning, 16 September at 8.30;
* No truck arrived at 8.30. We phoned them at 10am to find out what was happening and got hold of a “Jason” who said that, since we had agreed to a shared load, the truck had gone to Fourways first to load up a house there, and would come to us after lunch.
* There was no communication from them during the day - we continually tried to find out what time they were planning to get to us. We had made our plans to leave for Cape Town the following morning and had booked and paid for overnight accommodation on route.
* Eventually at 6pm that evening, they said they would not make the collection. After we threatened to cancel they arranged to collect the load early on Saturday morning. As we were going to drive to Cape Town on Saturday they told us that they would be arriving at 06:30 to load.
* Needless to say, they didn’t arrive at the agreed time with the excuse that one of the crew was delayed but they would be there at around 9 am. I called them around that time to find out where they were and the driver told me he was just finishing a pick up in Kempton and would be on his way shortly.
* They finally arrived around 10: 30 am in an unmarked and unroadworthy truck with a driver and two helpers with no packing material other than some blankets.
* We had been quoted for four packers with bubble wrap, plastic wrapping and other packing materials to protect our valuables - they had none of that;
* I took photos of the truck as the tyres were bald the windscreen was damaged and the general state of the vehicle was of concern. I contacted their operations manager, Jason, and he said he would get the tyres sorted. He made all sorts of excuses about not being aware that there was supposed to be four loaders and packing materials. I was not prepared to let them load our valuable possessions on that vehicle and sent them on their way.
* I have been involved in the transport industry for many years and know a great deal about trucks.
* At this point we decided we had to cancel the planned move and get in our car and head to Cape Town; which we did, with the plan to sort things out on Monday with K&F
* I contacted Peter on Monday morning at 10am (one would think they would contact an unhappy customer first thing!!). His reply was “I was just about to phone you!”. We were understandably annoyed but they said that they would undertake to move us on Wednesday afternoon at 3pm and once again put this in writing and sms.
* I explained that I would have to fly up to be there when they loaded so they could not let us down again. I then booked a flight back to Johannesburg on Wednesday morning, 22nd September to supervise the move and return to Cpt on Thursday morning. (flights cost R2300 plus car hire R 500.)
* Needless to say, I waited in vein as the van did not arrive at all that day.
* The next promise, or lie, was that the truck was then going to come at 08h00 on Thursday morning, the 22nd September, of course, it didn’t arrive and I had to leave to catch my flight back to Cpt;
* I then cancelled the deal having exhausted all options and having been more than accommodating.
* After I had cancelled the contract due to non-delivery and requested the refund of my deposit I was contacted by a Mr Kruger by email. He is supposedly the owner of the company. After numerous emails, he undertook, in writing, to pay back my money on the 5th October.
* They have not paid and are playing games again.

I am currently taking legal action to collect my deposit.
I have kept records of all the correspondence photos etc. should there be any doubt as to the case above.

Unfortunately, we only became aware of this problem with K&F after we had contracted them. Had we seen the complaints on Hello Peter beforehand we would have been able to avoid this unfortunate situation.

Consequently, I would like to add my warning to prospective customers that this company and their employees are ************, devious and dishonest.

The action I am taking is likely to shut their operation down so do not use their services.

Whether I recover my money or not is immaterial I would like to prevent anyone else from falling prey to these **********.

Ian McDonald
