Shockingly Poor Service from Nursing Staff in Ward 5B
My mother was admitted to Karl Bremer Hospital ER at around 13h30 on Saturday 20 September 2025. She was moved to a ward around 11h45 on Sunday morning, 21 September 2025. Initially the staff was very friendly and helpful. A lady by the name of Sharon was assisting my mother when I arrived at the hospital. "She is an angel sent from heaven" my mom said. Unfortunately, this was where the good treatment of my mother ended.
My mother has been struggling with nausea from her pain medication, which we realized was the Tramadol. She has been on only Morphine every 6 hours since late Sunday. She has been asking for the doctor to see her and prescribe something to help her with pain instead of the Tramadol. She was given Panado by the nurses. The night staff from the night shift, 22 September 2025, was rude towards my mother and the other patients in Room 3 from the first moment they stepped foot into ward 5B.
Details of events 22 September 2025:
- Shortly after 20h00, the nurse came into room 3 (ward 5B) to inject the lady lying next to my mother with insulin as she is diabetic. She injected the lady and told my mother that she will come back to give her Morphine.
- 00.30 my mother saw the sister on duty pass their room and she called for assistance. This is 4 and a half hours after the nurse told my mother she will be back with her morphine. This is now more than 10 hours with no pain relief. The helpful sister immediately assisted my mother.
- 02.00 the same nurse walked past down the hallway and my mother called her for assistance as she was very nauseous from the pain medication, throwing up. The nurse rudely snapped at my mother "speak English". My mother then asked for something to help with the nausea. The ruse nurse turned around and walked away.
- 04.05 still no assistance with nausea relief. The sister walked past the room and my mother called her to please help her as she has been vomiting and feeling horrible. The sister assisted.
- 05.00 the rude nurse returned to the room with water for washing and clean bedding. My mother asked if she could please hand her the water bottle standing on the tray table at her feet. Please note that my mother broke her leg badly and is in a cast so she cannot get up by herself. The ruse nurse snapped at her "I'm busy". Very rude and unhelpful. She then continued to slam a bowl of water onto the table next to my mother. The rude nurse changed bedding on all the other beds except for my mothers. My mom then asked if her bedding would be changed and the rude nurse snapped "no" and walked out of the room.
It is very clear that my mother is being mistreated by this specific nurse whose name I am going to find out and lay formal complaint against her. This is clearly a personal attack against my poor mother who has been suffering from pain with no care of this nurse. There is also no ring bell, which means my poor mother cannot ask for assistance. She has to wait till someone eventually walks past the room so that she can call for assistance.
I understand that this is a government hospital and that I cannot expect good service, but this is just unacceptable. To make my mother wait over 4 hours for pain medication with a broken leg is inhumane.
I had such good hopes for Ward 5B after I met the friendly and polite staff on the Sunday midday, but clearly this quality of care does not follow through to all staff at Karl Bremer Hospital.
