My concerns were only confirmed after I transferred my cat to Onderstepoort
I am sharing my personal experience with Kanonkop Dierekliniek regarding the treatment of my cat, Prinses. Prinses was admitted on 2 August 2026 with severe renal abnormalities and was placed on IV fluid therapy. During her hospitalisation, no urine production had been observed. I became increasingly concerned and specifically asked whether she had urinated, whether an ultrasound had been performed, whether urine testing had been done, and whether a urinary obstruction or stones could be responsible for her sudden deterioration. I raised these concerns repeatedly, including in writing on 3 August and again at approximately 03:30 the following morning. By that stage I was extremely concerned about her condition and was not comfortable waiting for further assessment later that morning after requesting 3 times to several drs. I therefore made the decision myself to collect Prinses and take her directly to Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital for emergency specialist assessment. Onderstepoort subsequently diagnosed acute kidney injury associated with a urethral obstruction caused by several small urinary stones, together with metabolic acidosis and hyperkalaemia. She required urgent catheterisation and intensive treatment. Kanonkop’s position is that Prinses’s bladder had been small/not distended during their examinations and that they did not believe an emergency ultrasound was clinically indicated at that stage. They have also acknowledged that information regarding preceding fluid administration could have been communicated more clearly between clinicians. My concern remains very simple: Prinses had severe renal abnormalities, was receiving IV fluids, no urine production had been observed, and I was repeatedly raising the possibility of an obstruction — yet further imaging and escalation had still not taken place before I independently transferred her. I do not believe that I should have had to repeatedly raise these concerns myself while my critically ill cat was already hospitalised under veterinary care. I subsequently requested that Kanonkop reconsider the treatment costs. The practice conducted an internal review and declined reimbur*****t. I am now referring the matter through the appropriate professional and consumer channels for independent assessment. I am not posting this to make a veterinary finding myself. I am sharing my documented experience so that other pet owners can make their own informed decisions.
