Relax & Recharge
Kagga Kamma: Before I go any further, let me quickly explain where Kagga Kamma is—so many people ask when I say we were there. It’s tucked away in the southern Cederberg mountains of the Western Cape. "Kagga Kamma" sounds like a word from a fairytale, doesn’t it? But it's actually a name given by the San people—the original inhabitants of Southern Africa. In their language, it means “place of water.” You might wonder where this water is hiding in such a rugged, alien-looking landscape... Spoiler: it is there—you just have to know where to look! The land is rich in cultural heritage, with rock art dating back up to 6,000 years—created by the San who once called this area home. You’re basically walking through an open-air art gallery. Check-In: Where You’re Greeted and Disconnected All at Once At Kagga Kamma, Elsje welcomed us with a smile and an ice-cold drink—a touch of luxury after a bumpy dirt road. With friendly faces all around, we completed the necessary forms, breezed through the safety rules, and received our keys. Warning: No cellphone signal. Not “bad signal”—none. Zero. Zilch. Nada. But don’t panic—you can still reach the outside world through the sacred space known as The Lounge, where the Wi-Fi lives (or hides, depending on the weather).
We had the opportunity to do the rock art tour, and I honestly felt like I was in an Indiana Jones movie during the rock art tour. That’s all I’ll say—it’s an absolute must-do with a guide. Fascinating.
Accommodation
The Cave Suites (yes, actual manmade caves built into the rock face!) and the Hut Suites, inspired by traditional San dwellings, are really something special—the ideal getaway for two. The Honeymoon Suite? Oh, it comes with that extra bit of magic: champagne, fresh flowers, soft bedding… You almost expect someone with a violin to pop out from behind the curtain. Wedding plans? They also have venues for weddings and special events—nestled beautifully among those dramatic rock formations.
The Heart of Kagga Kamma: Lounge & Restaurant The lounge isn’t just a place to rest your feet. Nope, it’s the official Wi-Fi Embassy of the reserve. With a cozy fireplace that draws people in like moths to a flame ****erally), it’s where stories are shared, friendships blossom, and hot chocolate is sipped with reverence. We couldn’t resist its charm and often found ourselves there—warm, comfy, and yes… sneakily checking if WhatsApp messages had finally gone through whenever the Wi-Fi felt like cooperating. The Restaurant: They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner in style. The food isn’t just delicious—it’s a visual treat.
Kagga Kamma: Pick Your Adventure Hiking Trails, bicycle routes, stargazing.
Just relax and recharge.
