Very poor quality, defective upholstery service and unreasonable response

During December 2017 I delivered some fabric to K Marx in Glenhazel for use in 2 rectangular upholstered cushions to be made up for 2, relatively simple indoor bench seats. I made the cardinal mistake of trusting the provider and paid the full R2 211 upfront. Upon delivery, it was clear that the cushions had been very poorly made up; they did not fit the benches, and the cut outs in the corners did not nearly coincide. There was no batting and the fabric slid around and puckered against the foam. I sent them back with clear instructions and even photos as regards the defects, and received, a few weeks later, the second attempt. It was as bad as the first, if not actually worse. A makeshift attempt had been made to glue on additional internal foam rubber to extend the width and realign the cut-outs, the fabric covers were clearly ill-fitting, with marked deviations in widths and piping lines, the cut-outs still did not fit properly, and the whole thing looked like a right mess, visible to the naked eye by any layperson. I therefore cancelled the contract and claimed a refund of the cost and of the fabric at R3600. My claim was rejected with arrogance and denials, and there followed several days of emails, more photos, threats of legal action, another visit at which Mr Marx himself simply refused to acknowledge that his workmanship was way under par ("nothing is perfect in this word; I will not pay you back 1 cent over R1000" - he said.) Eventually, after almost instituting action, a settlement was reached and R3 200 was paid back to me. I had thought that K Marx had a good name in the market, but was obviously mistaken. I have seldom come across such shoddy service, *********** workmanship and downright unreasonable attitude from any contractor, and I have engaged many in my time. I would avoid K Marx entirely in the future, and advise you to do the same.
