John Dorys never again

Today (Fathers Day) my husband and I decided to take his parents out for lunch. We thought we would chance John Dory's fish in Kimberley, northern cape again. We had had a dismal experience once before a few years ago but thought we'd give them another chance. Bad decision. I am not a particularly fussy eater, I like good, plain food that tastes like what it is. My and my husband's seafood platters looked very unappetizing and smelt odd. There were no nice fishy, garlicky, herby aromas around at all. Instead, everything had been smothered in some sort of overpowering spice which we did not ask for. Everything tasted exactly the same. It could have been a plate of absolutely anything. The 'catch of the day' included in the platter was supposedly kingklip. I have eaten kingklip (previously frozen and fresh) many times in my life and I have never had a slimy piece before..... until the piece I tasted on that platter today. I shudder to think what it actually was. I tasted everything on the plate. I tried to eat it. I just could not. Nothing tasted like it was supposed to. My mother in law ordered a fish fillet and chips. The waiter brought 3 sets of knives and forks so he was aware of the three orders but my mother in law never got her food. The waiter never even noticed that he hadn't brought her anything but a knife and fork. Pathetic. My mother in law complained at the till on our way out and the lady behind the till actually laughed in her face! Disgraceful. We will never go there again. Never.
