Review for Johannesburg Surgical Hospital

My name is Muhammad Adam, and I underwent gynecomastia surgery on 16 May 2024 at Johannesburg Surgical Hospital.

Leading up to the surgery, the staff were professional and courteous, which made me feel reasonably at ease as I prepared to go into theatre. However, my experience took a disappointing turn after the surgery. I clearly remember the nurse being moody even while I was under anesthetic, which made me feel incredibly uneasy. After the surgery, the same nurse, responsible for taking me back to the ward, continued to display a level of moodiness that was not only unprofessional but also deeply unsettling.

When leaving the hospital, I actually had to greet her two or three times before she finally looked up from her phone and greeted me back. This surgery was life-changing for me, one that I had spent a long time saving up for, and to be treated with such negativity during such a vulnerable moment was extremely disheartening.

Instead of feeling relieved and supported when leaving, I felt edgy and upset due to the nurse’s unpleasant attitude. I strongly believe that nursing is not just about medical care, it’s about showing empathy and compassion, especially when dealing with patients who are in an emotional and sensitive state. Her level of behaviour did not reflect the standards expected in her role. I suggest she consider stepping aside for a nurse who is more deserving and capable of providing the care patients need.
