Jan Kapp Electrician
I contacted this man for a solar installation in Meyerton, he sent me a quote and we agreed on a price, i then paid a deposit, he came to my residence the day for the installation and immediately put me, the customer to work. At the time i didnt mind it much until i saw how bad and amateur his work was, i started getting worried as he drilled so many holes in my walls just to find out its not the correct spot to put the trunking. We were desperate to have the system installed to power the house during loadshedding and the office where i conduct my business from. After that day i told him that we should just wait 2 days as the panels outside needs a frame to stand in, and i will build it. I had the frame built within the timeframe, i contacted him again and notified him that the frame is now finished, and he can come connect the panels and wires. He postponed it 2 times and tried to postpone the work for the 3rd time, this was after almost 3 weeks, and i said, no, we are not postponing it again. He had some lame excuses that he didnt want to do it as he needs get into the ceiling to pull wires through, and he didnt feel like it cause its too hot. So once again, i "the client" said, ok, ill go into the roof, and ill pull the wires through. He came here the afternoon, i installed the trunking leading to the ceiling and the trunking outside the house leading to the solar panels, i also dug the trench myself, basically did all the work, what he has to do now after i pulled the wires through, is just connect, right? So, he takes out his drill and a 20mm holesaw and drills a hole in my damn cornish, not even putting a piece of conduit in there to make it look neat, no, just a hole and the wires went through there i pulled from the outside. So now the original quote was paid, and he charged me again, R1700 for the callout, but i did all the work? So he charges me that to connect 2 wires and 4 MC4 connectors. I was a little short on solar wire and he went to his truck to get some, which he told me earlier comes from places he works, and they are offcuts he gathers, so he quoted me for that wire he gets for free as well. But this is not the worst....it is now 4 Months later, and 3 days ago i started smelling burnt plastic in the house, and then hearing a noise coming from the inverter, so i thought it was about to burn out or something, but then realised the noise is also coming from the DB box, so i went closer, and there it was, burnt plastic smell. I tried to phone this guy, no answer, i tried again after a while, no answer, so i sent a whatsapp, no answer, then i sent more, no answer.....so i phoned him again, and he eventually picked up with an excuse that hes busy, so i told him the wires are burning inside the box here, and he said he will attend to me once he is done there at IBM. Now, the DB box burnt that same day and all power was off now, and he didnt pitch up, not answering my messages whatsoever, eventually i said we have to get another electrician to fix this mess. So, we got one, he came, opened the box, and found burnt wires. That same electrician told me that its an old trick in the book that electricians have, they will not tighten the wires properly, creating a timebomb, and eventually those wires will burn again, and you as the customer contacts the same guy that worked on the job, so hes gonna quote you again, sucking out more money. The original electrician gave me a COC but wrote the wrong stuff on there, he then corrected it in pen, which renders the COC now useless for insurance and warranty purposes. What ever you do, Do not hire this man. He operates in Gauteng and North west, vereeniging, Vd Byl park. My experience was very bad with him. If it was not for our electrician, we would not have known what the tricks were, and we would have sat without power up intil now. We didnt even get a test report, so i dont even know if the guy is really qualified, but the workmanship, and how he treats his customers is very poor
