On Sunday, 2024/11/10, I began receiving alarming emails from MTN informing me of multiple SIM swap attempts being made on my cell number, with an additional notification arriving the following Monday morning. Concerned, I immediately contacted MTN's ***** department for clarity. They directed me to address the issue at iStore Vaal Mall, the location linked to the SIM swap activity.

Attempting to reach out to the iStore proved futile as their direct contact leads only to a centralized helpdesk, where I reported that I had not initiated any SIM swap requests nor had I shared any OTPs or personally visited the branch. I was assured of a prompt follow-up which, disappointingly, never materialized.

In the interim, the situation escalated; my 20-year-old Hotmail account was compromised—its password and recovery details were altered. This breach extended to my ISP account where unauthorized transactions were made. Given that my phone number, which serves as my primary method for backup authentication, had been hijacked, I was rapidly locked out of my own digital life, prompting an urgent need to secure my bank accounts among other sensitive accesses.

Later that day, armed with evidence from MTN indicating a specific user ID at iStore Vaal Mall associated with the *****ulent activity, I visited the store. The responses were unsettling and contradictory; initially, I was informed that it's possible for different individuals to use the same credentials, only to later hear that the implicated employee couldn't have accessed MTN's systems to perform a SIM swap. The lack of accountability and failure to provide any tangible proof that measures were taken to prevent further misuse of that account or to rectify the situation is both frustrating and alarming.

This experience has not only resulted in significant personal data and financial security risks but also highlighted a grave concern regarding the handling of sensitive customer information by iStore Vaal Mall.
