No official repair service for Apple products

Required an iPhone repair (broken screen) but told that the iStores only SELL Apple products and DO NOT conduct any repair work!! How crazy is this. Customers surely anticipate that if you are an official APPLE sales centre that you would provide after sales service but this is not the case . . . not even a recommendation as to where to obtain service.
