Apple abandons its products

I have a 17 inch MacBook Pro. The I Store says they are under strict instructions from Apple NOT to service, repair or touch any product that is not currently sold. Can you imagine taking your car in for a service and being told - "sorry Sir, it's no longer a current model, we can't touch it". How can a worldwide company like Apple be allowed to abandon its own products, just because there are newer versions. Disgraceful.
