Lack of Compassion
My uncle passed away on 06 September 2026 and a claim was submitted through an Absa branch as he had an Absa Life policy. It was discovered that the beneficiary on the policy is recorded as M Plaatjie with a date of birth of 1995. However, my uncle had nominated his brother, who also has the initial "M" and was born in 1980. We believe an error may have occurred when the beneficiary details were captured.
We were advised to obtain a Letter of Authority, but the court declined to issue one despite being provided with an affidavit confirming that there is no family member matching the recorded date of birth. We have also requested that the policy proceeds be paid directly to the funeral parlour due to the urgency of the burial, but this request was declined.
The family is now left in an extremely difficult position, with my uncle's body still in the mortuary and no clear resolution in sight. While we understand that procedures must be followed, we believe there should be consideration for exceptional circumstances where families are trying to bury their loved ones with dignity.
We are deeply disappointed by the lack of flexibility and compassion shown during this process and hope that our case can be reviewed urgently.
Thank you for your feedback.Could Absa please confirm with Home Affairs whether there is a record of this unknown beneficiary? In addition, please confirm whether due diligence was performed when the policy was taken out, specifically whether a copy of the beneficiary's ID was requested and verified against the information provided on the application form.
