Unacceptable Customer Support

Had a battery replacement done on my iPhone 5 back in earlier December of last year. Noticed that on the very next day, the capacity of the battery according to Coconutbattery, that it was 28% instead of 100%. I initially ignored it as perhaps it was a new battery or software glitch. ****, I was so wrong.

Now during this year, noticed that the battery was acting weird. The capacity dropped from 100% to 23% again. Then there was a lockdown and the COVID-19 pandemic. So I could not take my battery back to weFix to have it, replaced. Now, in October where I now have time, I took my phone to weFix in Cape Town to have it replaced for free as realistically, a battery should suddenly not drop from 100% to 23% very quickly, especially when it has only 45 full charge cycles.

The consultant there, was very friendly, understanding and helpful. Upon from receiving the quote that the battery was indeed faulty. I decided to take it up to Customer Support as she also recommended me in doing so. But the support people were horrible and not understanding at all despite all the technical evidence and information given.

I can understand with regards to the longevity of the battery, but what makes this case very frustrating is that it did not function as expected. Batteries in today's smartphones are using lithium-ion technology. Compared with older generations of battery technology, lithium-ion batteries charge faster, last longer, and have a higher power density for more battery life in a lighter package. That is why the smartphones these days are so light. A normal battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles when operating under normal conditions. My phone only has 45 complete charge cycles and already it is at 24% according to CoconutBattery. I can guarantee I was operating my phone under normal conditions. It's not like I am working in a Nuclear facility or a steel facility where radiation and extreme heat would affect the phone and its battery. I am merely a student, learning. It's not like a student is doing something nuclear with their phone that kills the battery.

Is it not strange that the battery gave out when it was out of warranty? It's very suspicious. Normally after 10 months, the battery should still be at least 95% capacity at 45 complete charge cycles. Even my old Apple Original Battery is better than this! At a charge of 1138 FULL COMPLETE charge cycles, it is only at a mere 22%. It is completely way better than the replacement battery. The new replacement battery only needed a minute 3.95% of my old battery's charge cycles to achieve the 24% total battery capacity.

Is there no exception for this? Do you not trust the customer? I do understand that every business is trying to survive because of lockdown and COVID-19. I am not trying to run the company out of their money. I am completely honest about this. This is a genuine concern as many of my friends have their stuff replaced by you and I recommend you guys to them and more people as your customer service and parts were great. But having such an incident like this changes my opinion.

The reason for not choosing 1 star is that the consultant at the Cape Town store was friendly, understanding and helpful.

Good day Duy,

We trust you are well and having a good week. As per our response to ypu.

Thank you for reaching out to us.

We have further looked into this for you and we see your first battery replacement was done on the 04 December 2019. As our warranty for batteries is 6 months, you warranty expired on the 01 June 2020. This is almost 4 months after the warranty, which in total you had fully functional battery for 10 months before you started experiencing issues.

We completely understand Covid regulations' but the store has been opened since the 04 May 2020 - Please advise if you had sent any other communication to the store or weFix  prior to coming in today and requesting for a new battery?

Furthermore the longevity of a battery is affected by multiple factors.

Some examples of items which would affect the longevity of a battery would be the length of charge, frequency and amount of charging cycles, whether charging cycles were completed, the adaptor voltage, the cable (original or not), whether the battery was charged by a plug, car or power-bank and exposure to heat or cold. All of these affect the performance of a battery, and naturally, with time and the above factors the battery degrades.

As a result, we only warranty our batteries for a period of 6 months after sale.
As we're not unreasonable and want to assist you as best we can not do this repair in warranty for you. We're happy to offer you a discount on you next repair should you wish to have your battery changed.

We trust you understand.

Best Regards
