"The customer is always playing frisbee with their Macbooks" - WeFix

For 2 years I have been trying to get a working screen repair from WeFix. I initially paid R12 000 for a MacBook Pro Screen repair. At that stage I had been using WeFix since they opened, and believed them to be trustworthy and good at repairing Apple devices. I am now on my 4th screen, and they seem to be unable to provide me with a functional repair. Every screen they have repaired it with has had some issue. One of the screen they repaired it with was damaged, even though I was told it was new. If I hadn't picked this up myself, WeFix would have done nothing.

The worst part is that despite repairing my screen with already faulty products, they have blamed me at every turn. Telling me I must have dropped it, bumped it, or done something to it. My laptop is what I use to earn an income, I guard it with my life, and treat it well. Every time they needed to replace my screen they made up tall tales about how I must have damaged it. Every contact made about the screen generally started with talks of voiding my warranty.

It is no wonder that all their branches have closed. The attitude at WeFix is terrible, and telling customers they are at fault so that they can void a warranty is disgusting. I have laid a complaint with the Consumer Goods & Services Ombudsman, and will pursue this until WeFix realises that if they want to do business in this manner, their entire business will certainly close.

Good day

We trust you are well

Firstly we would like to thank you for being a loyal customer of weFix. We value all our clients and customer service is very important to us.

We have further looked into this matter and we see that as per our system your first repair was in September 2021. You then returned to us in July 2022 as you were experiencing issues. We assessed and honoured our warranty as stipulated in our T&Cs.

Unfortunately upon your return this time, your Macbook has signs of physical damage which voids our weFix warranty, also stipulated in our T&Cs

From the technician's assessment, there were co**** sand particles in between the hinges of your Macbook. The co**** sand particles caused damage to your screen and therefore this repair cannot be done in warranty.

We can assure you that we have been trying to assist you as best we can, within reason, and are sorry that you found our feedback unsatisfactory.

Collection for your unrepaired Macbook has been arranged as per your request.

Kind Regards
weFix

I appreciate your response. It is however now possible for a grain of sand to void the warranty on a 2 month old screen. Other than working in an airtight environment, dust etc are part of every day life. I regularly go to great lengths to clean my laptop, with a blower brush, compressed air, etc. As stated, my laptop is what earns me an income, and thus, I take good care of it. You pointed at one spec of dust in the images. How one or even more specs of dust or sand can destroy a screen that is 2 months old surely makes no sense. I will continue to pursue this, as it is evident my rights as a consumer are not being met or respected. An expensive repair has caused me endless amounts of stress, loss of income, and all you can do is say I damaged it. In that case, why don’t we look at the accelerometer readings for the last 12 months, and all other data that will determine physical damage. There is not a scratch on that screen, it’s brand new! Now you’re telling me a grain of sand voided the entire screen. That is not right, and I think you know it.

Hi Chirs,

We understand your frustration. However your warranty is not void due to us finding a "grain of sand or dust" on your MacBook but rather because the pressure caused from the course sand pressing against your screen when closing your MacBook has resulted in a hairline crack in the internal LCD, most indicatively caused from pressure inflicted by the course sand particles when closing your screen.
The crack in its self is physical damage and what has voided the warranty.

The MacBook Pro retina screens are fragile and these internal LCD cracks have even been caused from holding a MacBook too tightly when carrying it.
The co**** sand (not dust) unfortunately, in this instance was most likley was the cause of this pressure.
The hairline crack results in the lines displayed on your screen and are evidence of this:

The internal hairline crack is indicative of physical damage and this is what has voided your warranty, not the evidence of course sand.

"Pressure damage is just like it sounds.   Too much pressure was on the laptop's display causing the LCD to crack.   This could happen by holding the laptop too tightly when carrying it.   If you put the laptop into a bag when transporting it, then anything else in the bag could put pressure on the display and cause the LCD panel to crack.   Neither of these would leave any external marks or signs.   You do have to be a bit more careful with the Retina models since their displays are extremely thin and a bit more fragile.

If there are cracks in the glass or the LCD panel, then Apple considers it accidental damage even if there are no signs of impact or external damage."

Thank you for your reply and for taking the time to explain what you believe the issue to be. I don't think you understand my frustration - when last did you give a business R12 000 only for you to have to send your machine to CPT countless times, and have it returned unrepaired, or "repaired" for a few months until the repair breaks due to the shocking quality of the repair?

I was sent images with arrows pointing to dust/sand and told that the sand/dust was the problem. Hence me writing about it. But now I know that the problem is different, yet again.

Why has not a single screen that you have used to repair my machine worked for more than a few months? There is a pattern here. One of the screens you used to repair my machine was damaged, which resulted in me having to send it for another round trip to CPT. How can you take R12 000 and use an old and damaged screen to repair my machine? How did no one in your shop pick up that the screen was damaged? Why did it take me to pick up this damage and report it to you? Why did you try to make me believe that you were using new parts to do the repair, when it was clearly a second hand part?

Are you telling me that I have been abusing every single screen you have repaired this machine with? It must be some kind of record - 3 Apple Macbook Screen destroyed by one person in a matter of months. You almost make it seem like I hate my laptop, and all I am interested in is writing stuff on HelloPeter and sending my laptop for round-trips to CPT every few weeks. Maybe it's just me, but I am not sure why anyone would want to do this. Nevermind the fact that I work for myself, and every minute I spend not earning an income, is a loss. But here I am, apparently trying to rip you off by demanding something for the R12 000 I spent with your business. My machine is what I use to earn and income, so why would I mistreat this? Why would I press too hard anywhere on a laptop that I know is fragile, that has been to CPT so many times, that has cost me so much time, that has caused so much frustration? Please make it make sense, because I am not able to see your logic here. You are purporting that I am lying about how I treat my laptop, that I abuse it and simply demand new screens from you. When the reality is that not ONE screen you have repaired my machine with has worked for more than a few months. Is this fact not worth exploring further, rather than you pointing the finger at me? The likelihood of 3 different screens breaking in this manner is highly unlikely.

For more than 2 years I used my laptop in a variety of places and a variety of conditions, and did not have a single problem. No cracks in the screen, no problems with the screen. When the flex eventually broke (yes, I am aware of Flexgate) I came to you to repair it. This was clearly a mistake, as not a single repair done by you has lasted for more than a few months. Yet you try to make me believe, and your customers believe, that it is not your bad repair work, and poor quality parts, but it is the user. In the space of 18 months I destroyed 3 different screen by pressing too hard. Explain that? It has a hard shell case. It is kept inside a sleeve, and inside a bag. There is no pressure on the laptop, nothing is lying on top of it. It is inside THREE layers of protection. Since you started repairing this machine it has hardly left my desk. It hasn’t been dropped, it has hardly been moved.

Let’s imagine a different reality to the one you have so vividly painted - are the parts you are using not the problem? How does it logically work that not one screen you have repaired my machine with has lasted more than a few months? How does it logically work that every single screen has broken because of the exact same issue - me pressing it too hard? Statistically speaking the chances of this happening, are close to zero. Yet you keep telling me the same thing. Once again, your explanation as to the cause of this makes zero rational and logical sense. You have chosen to blame me, when your own reasons are completely void of truth and logic.

This is no longer about the screen, this is about the principle of a business taking advantage of its customers. Explain to my why I would willingly squander R12 000 by mistreating my own property? Why would I continually take the time and effort to cart my laptop to CPT so that you can take a look at it. Why would I take the time to take my machine to MacShack to get a second opinion and to check the quality of the parts, why would I report this incident to the Consumer Ombud which requires me to fill in many forms and is a laborious process? Am I doing this because I am trying to ***** R12 000 from WeFix - let me be very clear - I have better things to do than deal with this. I am doing this because I did NOTHING to my laptop, I am R12 000 out-of-pocket and for that all I get is broken screens, couriers back and forth, and some lame excuses of me pressing too hard on THREE different screens.

Strange that it has to go to CPT, since your branches everywhere else have closed down. Why have they closed down? Does it have something to do with consumers losing confidence in your business because of incidents like this one? Why is it that when speaking to other Apple repair businesses, each and every one talks about the bad reputation that WeFix has for using low quality parts to do repairs? You expect me to simply accept your strange and illogical explanation for why I am R12 000 poorer, with nothing to show for it.

The way this entire process is shameful and disgusting. No one can pick up a phone and have a conversation, no one can actually try to make a plan and help me. Your attitude is that the customer is the problem, and not your repairs. You may think you can do what you want, and lay the blame at my feet because you don't want to do things properly, but I will not stop fighting for my rights as a consumer.
