Not Certified with the way the complaint was handled.
I find ABSA’s treatment of people of color deeply disrespectful, and this issue urgently needs to be addressed. Financial institutions cannot operate above the law, and the findings of the Financial Intelligence Centre represent just the tip of the iceberg. These revelations reinforce my belief that South Africa’s banking industry still discriminates against Black customers. As a product of the merger of smaller Afrikaner banks, ABSA was never going to transform overnight, and I was naïve to expect dignified treatment.
I encourage Black South Africans whose home loans or insurance policies are with ABSA to document every interaction carefully. Preserve all communications—emails, letters, and notes—because one day you may need concrete evidence of discriminatory treatment based solely on the color of your skin.
