Absa Insurance Company Limited / National Financial ombuds man of south Africa (NFO) Dispute and Absa Insurance Company Limited Insurance Premium refund after Bond switch and HOC cancelation
I would like to review my experience with ABSA Insurance Company (AIC) and the National Financial ombuds man of south Africa (NFO) I would like to rate them to 1 star rating because of following reasons I made a claim for damage to my property covered by ABSA Insurance Company 2 May 2025. The claim was rejected but after a dispute report and evidence the dispute was over turned and paid out in full. It was damage to my swimming pool. I could not empty pool before the claim dispute was settled and when the claim was settled additional damage a crack in fiber glass side was discovered so I reported an additional claim to damage. An assessor was sent to my property for assessment 8 day’s after reporting this. Dew to the report of assessor with mistakes and false claims the claim was paid out but after deductions of materials and his own cost estimations, only 35% of the claimed amount was paid out. I accepted the claim amount offered by AIC after inquiring the reason for this claim deductions but did not agree with this decision in AIC response and launched a depute with the National Financial ombuds man of south Africa (NFO) After this I contacted the National Financial ombuds man of south Africa (NFO) and registered a dispute on 16 September 2025 against ABSA Insurance Company. I was informed that the dispute would be investigated after the response from myself and ABSA Insurance Company comments was received by the NFO. It is 17 March 20, 2026 and after inquiring a couple of times it is 6 months later with no outcome or correspondence from NFO. This is quite a long time for an investigation to conclude as I have provided them with a 20-page dispute report disproving ABSA Insurance Company (AIC) and the assessor Mr Anton Janse Van Rensburg comments report compiled by the assessor with deliberate misinformation, incorrect deductions and even amounts miscalculated in report, on why the claim was not fully paid out. Since the Dispute’s with ABSA Insurance Company, I have decided to do a bond switch to another bank. The switch was finalized in December 2025 and ABSA Insurance Company was instructed to cancel my Home Owners Cover (HOC) by the bond attorneys in December. I am still waiting for my refund on my insurance that has been added to my Bond account on a yearly basis in October 2025 month as it is a year to year cover short term insurance. So they owe me 10 months of insurance premiums that they have not paid out to me. I contacted ABSA Insurance Company 2 weeks ago from an ABSA Branche by phone and was told the that the refund was on the system and would be paid out in 3 Days. Still didn’t receive any funds from ABSA. As these premiums was paid after dispute year it has nothing to do with the dispute, This is unacceptable by the National Financial ombuds man of south Africa (NFO) for a dispute review taking 6 months to resolve and by ABSA Insurance Company taking 3 months after instruction to cancel my Home Owners Cover (HOC) as I am paying the other bank for home owners cover since December and bond was finalized at that time. It is clear that consumers rights and expectations of fair treatment by these 2 Financial institutions is a non-concern from the insurance industry that claims to protect you from loss or damage to property and the National Financial ombuds man of South Africa (NFO) that is there for consumer protection and fairness to claims and dispute resolution. I would hope that this review would serve as a warning to ABSA insurance clients. This feels like the National Financial ombuds man of South Africa (NFO) is protecting ABSA Insurance Company and not the consumer right to dispute by not concluding the dispute.
