ABSA Activate Wrote Off My Driveable Car and Left It Rotting in a Salvage Yard
Do not insure your vehicle with ABSA Activate. This is my experience. On 26 March 2026 I was in an accident in my 2022 Renault Clio 5. I noticed a fluid leak and chose not to drive the vehicle at night. Responsible decision. The leak was a washer fluid bottle. The car was driveable. What ABSA did next is why I am writing this. They declared my car a total write-off. It is not. An independent panel beater assessed the same vehicle using the same assessment system ABSA uses and quoted R133,000 to repair it. ABSA’s own assessment came back at R208,163.85 — from a single franchised dealer, never put out to competitive quotes, with OEM parts specified even for cosmetic panels like bumpers and bonnets. My own policy expressly permits the use of alternate parts. When I asked consultants to show me the clause requiring OEM parts they could not. Because it does not exist. The write-off threshold they app**** does not exist in my policy either. Three different consultants cited three different thresholds — 70%, 60%, 55% — across three separate calls. I have read my policy cover to cover. None of these figures appear anywhere in the document. They are making up rules on the spot and cannot produce them in writing when challenged. They moved my car to a salvage yard without telling me. I took a day off work to inspect the vehicle with an independent assessor. I arrived at the panel beater to be told the car had already been moved to Auction Nation. No call. No message. Nothing. I had to find my own car. When I found it I discovered wiring that had been cleanly cut — equal length, deliberate cuts — that formed no part of the original accident damage. The car is now sitting disassembled at the salvage yard. Engine bay open. Exposed to rain daily. Moved around by forklift on every visit with no accountability for the damage being caused. My vehicle is deteriorating every single day under an active, unresolved claim. My assigned handler has not called me once in over 30 days. Not once. Every update I have received has come from me calling the contact centre. Every consultant I have spoken to has cited rules that do not exist in my policy and collapsed when challenged. I owe significantly more on this vehicle than any write-off settlement will pay out. The gap between what ABSA will pay and what I owe is a shortfall I must carry personally — on a car I cannot access, that is being damaged daily, and that an approved panel beater has confirmed is repairable. ABSA Activate promises financial security. What they deliver — at least in my experience — is the opposite. I am in a worse financial position today than I was the day of the accident. That is not insurance. That is prejudice. Sadly, none of this is surprising when you consider the institution behind it. First it was the alleged Gold Mafia money laundering, then it was employees opening accounts in deceased people’s names to ***** funds. When the rot runs that deep in the core of an organisation it was only a matter of time before it seeped through to the insurance division. Woe unto the fools that continued to trust you. An honourable mention to my assigned claims handler Esther. It appears I am not alone — others have experienced the exact same thing. Thank you for your poor service Ma’am. May blessings find you wherever you go. May you receive a promotion and a generous bonus, because who better to lead an organisation than someone who truly embodies its values and lives them to the letter. Your superiors are watching Esther. I am certain they are impressed. You have upheld the reputation of ABSA with remarkable consistency.
An email telling me someone is handling this is useless to me. I want to know where you are in the process, substantive feedback not a copy and paste response from template in your SOP.
Alternatively let’s just agree your service as an organisation is dog sh*t and we can take this to a different platform that’s more neutral than your complaints team.
