Identity staff thinks customer is stupid!

This morning, March 18, I went to go pay my account at Identity in Eikestad Mall, Stellenbosch, branch 540. I previously worked at Identity and am currently studying Bcom (Industrial Psychology) at Stellenbosch University, which includes services marketing, so I have quite enough knowledge on this matter.

Identity's accounts close around the 15th of every month, so the payment due date is no later than 5 April.

So the sales consultant/cashier, employee number ********** , took my payment of R100, and then kind of nudged the supervisor/manager next to her and making eyes to the screen and repeating my payment amount. This was all evident to me, if she thought I didn't see or know what she was suggesting. I know my payment is R500 every month, and if she had to take a look at my account history, she'd have seen that my account is up to date and I sometimes usually pay in parts before the due date - that's how we make life easier. The manager/supervisor took a while to figure out what she was trying to say, but then rep**** "Aaargh, it's still early in the month. You can just ask her".

Firstly, what kind of professionalism is this?! I, the customer am standing right there, talk to me! I'd gladly want to inform you on the fact that I know how much I should pay; I know when the due date is and my account is up to date. Don't assume that the customer is stupid or inefficiently informed about their account issues or even on the matter of professionalism and communication s****s.

The sales consultant could have friendly reminded me of how much my payment is and that's it. She could've even waited for me to leave, before making assumptions and spoiling me morning! I walked out there, upset about the experience and so tempted to go back and give her a piece of my mind. I literally felt that she thinks I'm stupid, and I'm definitely not!

And by the looks of it, I'm most certainly not the first person to experience this, as they then should've learnt a lesson or two already. So let them learn the hard way but this post. And the thing is, the other staff there know I previously worked at an Identity store, and whenever I am assissted by them, I can't seem to find fault - that's because they know that I know a bit about the business. This is the point, don't assume customers know nothing about business.

Very dissatisfied!

Training and development of staff is definitely a need!

Thank you for your post.

We are concerned to read of the manner in which you were assisted and sincerely apologize for your experience.

We immediately escalated this matter to the relevant Area Manager to investigate and address with the staff members involved, to ensure that this remains an isolated incident. We believe that the Area Manager has attempted to call you on the number provided in your post and the alternative number listed on your account, but has regrettably been unsuccessful in her attempts. She has however asked us to apologize on behalf of the store.

We thank you for bringing this matter to our attention as it gives us the opportunity to address issues of concern.

Please feel free to contact us on *** or via email to *** should you have any further inquiries, comments or suggestions.

Sincerely yours,

Identity Online Team
