Insurance Reap off

I took a cellphone contract in 2017 with insurance, it's almost 4 years paying my insurance timeously. Then I lost my phone, tried to claim, when through all the process at the claim was denied because I stop using the phone in December, then I'm claiming now. The fact of the matter is I'm paying for my insurance I have a right to claim anytime. Why did the keep on deducting the insurance if they new that they won't pay should anything happen. I'm disgusted by Vodacom, this is a reap off. I want my money back or replace my phone
