No Independent Practice and No Refund
I am a Biomedical Technologist by profession. About 15 years ago, I had left the industry and worked in various other roles/industries. I did not deregister at the Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) so over the years I have been accumulating penalties. In 2020, when Covid hit, I decided that maybe I would like to go back and explore working in the lab again, even part-time. I got in contact with HPCSA and the condition was that I had to pay the penalty fee of over R22 000 for my name to be restored to the register. I paid the amount and was then sent a list of conditions that needed to be met for me to be able to practice independently. I had to work under supervision for 12 months, under a Registered Medical Technologist. I worked part-time and covered the 12 months. Thereafter, submitted this info to them so that I could be approved to work independently. This is when the drama started, they sent a new set of conditions completely different to the original ones (no more 12 months but rather 1000 hours and now it said accredited lab – none of this in the original communication of which I have documentation), my info was sent to the Board, I was declined to work independently. There was a lot of back and forth throughout 2021. So, I have now asked them to refund me my R22 000, as this was paid with the intention to be able to practice independently, and they are refusing. I don’t need my name to be restored to the register just to sit there, I need to be able to work. I have comp**** but they stuffed up from their side and no one wants to be held accountable. I send email after email, 10 people on the email and everyone remains silent. I am very happy to walk away from all this provided I receive my refund. This has been going on for 2 years and I am so frustrated. I will be taking this up further.
