Formal Review and Complaint Regarding the KUNYE Event – 9 May 2026, Rovers Durban

A company I recently worked with was contracted to provide event staff for the KUNYE event held at Rovers, Durban, on 9 May 2026. KUNYE engaged our services through a third-party events company responsible for staff placement and coordination. Unfortunately, our experience with this event was marked by a number of operational and communication challenges that negatively affected both our staff and the overall working environment. One of the primary concerns was the limited lead time provided for staffing requirements. We were contacted during the week of the event and were required to source and place personnel within a very short timeframe. Throughout the preparation process, communication regarding staffing requirements, operational procedures, and expectations was often unclear or incomplete, making effective planning difficult. On the day of the event, several operational shortcomings became apparent. From our perspective, security staffing appeared insufficient for an event of this scale, and there was no clearly communicated first aid or emergency response presence available to staff working on site. In addition, difficulties arose regarding stock allocation for VIP welcome packages, as pre-arranged stock was reportedly unavailable when required. The event's cashless payment system, operated through Howler, presented significant challenges throughout the day. While we have worked with this system previously and understand that technical issues can occur, the volume and frequency of support requests at this event placed considerable pressure on frontline staff. There appeared to be insufficient support personnel available on-site to address device malfunctions, account top-ups, refunds, and other customer service requirements. When assistance was required, locating the appropriate representatives was often difficult, particularly within the VIP area where support was needed consistently throughout the event. Response times frequently felt prolonged, and there was no clearly identified operations desk or central support point where staff could reliably report issues and obtain assistance. Another major concern was the conclusion of operations at the end of the event. Staff were required to remain on-site beyond their contracted finishing times. At the time of writing, we have not received confirmation regarding compensation for this additional time worked. The device handover process was particularly problematic. Staff were directed between multiple locations within the venue before being able to return equipment and complete sign-out procedures. As a result, some team members were only able to leave approximately two and a half hours later than anticipated. Following the event, communication regarding financial reconciliation and staff payments was also a source of concern. We understand that post-event reconciliations involving cashless payment systems can take several days while sales, stock, and transaction records are verified. However, for an extended period after the event, there was little communication regarding the progress of this process. Two weeks after the event, we were advised that reconciliations were nearing completion and that staff payments and gratuities would be processed shortly. Since then, multiple assurances have been provided that payment is imminent, yet as of the date of this review, 21 days have passed since the event and many staff members are still awaiting payment. Throughout this period, communication from the various parties involved has lacked the transparency and urgency that the situation requires. We appreciate that administrative delays can occur and that payment processes may involve multiple organisations. However, the absence of clear timelines and regular updates has created considerable frustration and uncer*****y for staff members who fulfilled their obligations and are relying on timely payment for their work. Our intention in sharing this feedback is not to assign blame to any individual or organisation, but rather to highlight serious concerns regarding event planning, operational support, communication, post-event administration, and staff welfare. We hope that these issues are reviewed constructively and that lessons are learned to improve future events. Event staff are a critical part of any successful operation and deserve clear communication, adequate support, efficient management, and timely compensation for their efforts. Based on our experience, significant improvements in planning, communication, operational support, and post-event administration would be required before we could confidently recommend involvement in a similar event managed under the same circumstances.
