Is it because I'm a woman?
I bought a Honda FRV from Honda Northclif in 2007. I religiously took my car for its services to the same dealership, except once, when I took it to Honda Sandton. I had an accident with the car in 2008 when I went into the back of the car in front of me in an attempt to get away from a smash and grab. I think the aircon got damaged and even though I would complain about it at every service, I will be told it only needed to be re-gassed. But the fun really started once the car was out of warranty. Low and behold with the first service after the warranty I was told my aircon is damaged and needed to be replaced. I was also told I need a new clutch. I could not afford any of this at the time and had the essentials done and was on my way, fuming because of the misdiagnosed aircon. I drove out and proceeded with the "faulty" clutch through two more services. In the meantime, added to the list of things I could not afford was a noisy alternator (which miraculously exposed itself during a service) and missing mounting brackets. After the third service (this is now 45 000km later), I realised that I will have to bite the bullet and replace the clutch; cost approximately R18 000 with labour. I had to refuse their quote again as I simply could not afford to pay for the service, brakes and a new clutch all at once. I managed to source a service centre who replaced my clutch and aircon at almost half the quote Honda Northcliff gave me. My next service which was 15 000 km later, I took the car to Honda Northcliff again. As always, they had to check my brakes, the squeaking sound (missing mounting brackets) and the alternator. The clutch was working 100% and of no concern. Imagine my surprise when I received a call an hour later telling me that amongst all the other known issues, I also must replace my clutch! I incredulously explained the clutch was new and shouldn't be a problem. The lady sounded somewhat surprised because she does not have on record that the clutch was replaced. I was so taken a back I could not recall when and where the clutch was replaced, just that it was and that I didn’t have an issue with clutch?? Out of interest I asked her to give me the quote. A whopping R55k for a car with 165 000km on the clock. Which again I refused. I had the brakes and the service done and left Honda Northcliff again furious and disappointed. It is now a week later.... the clutch is slipping and shuddering when I pull away. I don't know what they have done and frankly I am not interested. Honda's are lovely cars, but the service from Honda is shocking. I appreciate the fact that my car is old and parts will deteriorate and will need to be replaced. I have a problem with the fact that the problem aircon was only identified when the car was out of warranty even though I asked them repeatedly to check as it is not working as it should be. I have a problem with the fact that I still got 45 000km out of a "faulty" clutch. I have a problem with the fact that parts which didn't show any sign of being faulty will come out of the workshop in need to be replaced. With the last service, I get the impression that I was quoted based on what was in my service record and not because they have actually checked the car. However, I have to give credit to the always friendly and efficient ladies at reception. Unfortunately, their positive attitude does not necessarily spill over to the actual servicing of the car. I am fortunate to at last be in the position to buy a new car in the next week or two. It will most definitely not be a Honda.....
