Homechoice billing a mess
In April 2025 I placed an order for a mattress and base set and Mattress Protector with Home Choice. It was my belief the two would be delivered together. On 14 April I received correspondence from Homechoice my order was being processed . On 22 April I received the Mattress Protector only. When I inquired from the courier about the bed set, he said maybe another company would would do the delivery. I waited. A week or so I received a call from someone speaking about mattress delivery but was not sure if it was the bed I ordered. I asked him to confirm the make of the bed and he positively identified it. It was Friday early evening and the guy sounded not sober. I waited for him to deliver but he did not pitch up. Days later I made inquiries with the original courier in Durban named Mohammed. He told me the bed was returned to them as I indicated I did not like it. Couriers don't make you sign for rejecting the order I learned. I was now left with a mattress cover which was still sealed. When I opened it, I found a delivery note which placed my address in Limpopo, despite I live in Gauteng. The protector cost R699 with a monthly installment of R285. 21 I felt it would be better if I negotiated a three month payment period. Luckily a Homechoice branch opened nearby, at Jubilee Mall. I went to the shop and gave them my details and my desire to pay off the account in three months. On the 24th May a debit order went off from my account. I was taken aback because I had not concluded a Debicheck mandate with Homechoice. I was undecided about the debit since I made a new payment arrangement at the shop. Then my bank flagged the debit order as ********. I reversed it. I then made payment as per agreement with the shop at the counter. On the 25/06 another debit went through my account and I reversed it. I then blocked them from making further debits. Each time after the reversal of the debits I received accusatory messages like I was reneging on an undertaking I made. I made a counter payment in June and had and the branch told be I had R467-12 balance. I made two payments of R250 and R217-12 in July and between then I got a message my account had access funds. Apparently someone paid the balance in my account after I paid the R250. I went to the branch and they confirmed my account had access amount. Who paid? I asked. "The money was debited from your Absa account." The teller told me. I have no Absa account, and I demanded to see the payment in question on her screen. Yes, money drawn from an Absa account was used to settle my Homechoice account. I demanded to pay the remaining R217.12 despite the account being paid up. On 30 July I received an accusing message that I reversed the debit. I thought it was the end of the story. My account now is in arrears by over R500 which cannot be explained and Homechoice is getting none of it. It was very low of them to go and debit someone's bank account to pay my account with them, after if I was not servicing my account. I am ready to go to Consumer Ombudsman when that time comes.
