Lousy Experience Trying To Open an Account

After more than a month I had still not received any feedback as to whether an account I wanted to open with @home was approved or declined. I had to phone them twice to find out what's happening, only to find it was eventually declined but I had received no notification about this. No explanation was given as to why it was declined. "Did not meet the company's criteria", said the call centre agent. When I asked what the company's criteria is, "It's confidential." Really.

I think one has the right to know why an account was declined. My guess is that it is because I work for myself as a freelancer. When you work for yourself, you just cannot get credit or loans anywhere. They need an "employer" that gives you a "payslip" while you sit in a mind-numbing 9-5 job. The self-employed person is clearly not considered a "working" person. So why then do you have a box for self-employed on your application form?

If that's not the reason they declined it, then I would like an explanation for it. I'd also like to know why I was not informed that it was declined. What an appalling experience.
