Warranty not worth the paper it's printed on

We bought a 21kg smart top loader washing machine and after just 7 months the hinge on the lid broke when closing the washing machine. No heavy objects were at any point on the lid and the lid was not forces closed to make the hinge snap. I contacted customer service and was told that the hinge breaking is not covered under the warranty, the warranty only covers the hinge if it was not working. Surely it was not working properly for it to suddenly break?
