A cautionary tale to not purchase the Hirsch’s extended warranty…

About 4 years ago, we bought a Defy oven from Hirsch’s Centurion, with the extended warranty attached (over R900). In March this year, the oven stopped heating. We called Hirsch’s, they sent a technician a few days later, who diagnosed the bottom element as broken. A new element was ordered from Defy and installed at the end of March.

A week and a half later, the oven goes “bang”, and kicks off the power in the whole house. The same technician arrives, and decides the thermostat is also damaged. He did not check the thermostat during his first visit, apparently. A new thermostat is installed a week later.

Two days later, the oven goes “bang” again. After what feels like hundreds of phone calls to Hirsch’s, they arrange for a Defy technician to have a look. This is now near the end of April… The Defy technician tells us that the Hirsch’s technician installed completely the wrong element for the oven, that it is too small for the oven, and that it is not even fastened properly, and that it needs to be replaced.

We don’t deal directly with Defy, only with Hirsch’s, as that is who we paid the extended warranty to. The Defy technician, according to Hirsch’s (and what felt like a 100 phone calls more), was promised to arrive on Friday 28 April. He never showed, with no updates from Hirsch’s, even though we called multiple times.

Hirsch’s had to arrange again for a technician on Wednesday 3 May. No one showed up, and my husband phoned Hirsh’s 8 times to try and find out if someone was coming, and what time, with absolutely no helpful response from Hirsch’s.

Finally, Defy phoned me on 3 May to say that they actually still have to order the part, and that it would hopefully arrive within 5-10 working days.

I will never deal with Hirsch’s again. The level of service, while friendly, is just completely *********** and clearly not trained correctly. I am unhappy that I spent money on a useless extended warranty. I also paid an independent electrician to have a look at the wiring leading to the oven, in case that was the problem (it wasn’t). This cost could have been avoided.
