Shocking service casualties
On Monday 4th December 2023, I rushed my husband to casualty. He had tested positive for Covid and is a diabetic. His temperature was alternating between 38 and 39.8. He was hallucinating in the car on the way to the hospital. He even lost consciousness at home. He was extremely sick. We arrived at the hospital just after 2pm. I left him in the car as he had Covid, a very infectious virus. I put on my mask. There was no sanitizer to be seen either at the entrance or in the reception area. I went straight to the lady at reception and she was very helpful with the paperwork and getting his file ready for admission and finding him a bed. Unfortunately I did not get her name. She had the paperwork done in no time and was phoning around to find him a bed. This was just before her shift ended. I was told to bring my husband inside. He had a mask on and was shivering and generally very sick. They made him sit right in the middle off the entrance passage on a PLASTIC chair, with people and staff walking right past him all the time. Absolutely no safety measures was taken. He sat in that chair for hours. He eventually told me that he was going to pass out. I asked them to get him onto a bed. I was told they are getting him a bed ready in casualties. That took quite a while. He felt so bad that he wanted to lie down on the floor. He was told they could do nothing for him as the Dr wanted to see him first. The doctor arrived after five and said he must be admitted. The medical aid then wanted blood tests and X-rays before he could be admitted. That was not the hospitals fault but the time it took to accomplish this was absolutely ridiculous. The blood tests was only done @18:42 by Ampath who are situated in the hospital. I don't even know when the X-rays were done, but he only got transferred to his room at 21:30. He is a diabetic in all that time he was not offered anything to eat or drink. Not even a glass of water! Casualties was busy when we got there but the treatment he received was absolutely appalling. I found some of the staff to be down right rude and very unhelpful. You have these "triage" boards up all over the walls but obviously the staff never read or understood them. That evening I phoned every single number I could find on the internet repeatedly, from the EMERGENCY number and even the wards. About 8 numbers in total and not a single one was answered. How can you not answer your emergency or casualty number??? I saw so many comments on social media how this hospital are going down hill and not to go there. I should have listened. Maybe you should do some research about how the local community feel about your so called 5 star hospital. Since he has been in his room he has no complaints. But what we experienced at your casualty department was traumatic. Please have at his file and blood test results so you can understand how very sick he was.
