Sold me a broken car, terrible communication and not covering costs to fix
I'm generally quite a passive person and I've delayed this post as it seems like a waste of time but apparently this is the only way to get corporate companies to wake up and i have been deliberately ignored by Clinton from Hyundai Milnerton.
I recently bought a second hand Chevrolet from the Hyundai dealership in Milnerton Hyundai Milnerton. The next day the engine light came on and i took the vehicle in to Reeds Motor Group Claremont to find a problem with the purge valve. Hyundai's initial response, as follows, was very disappointing-
'' Reeds is too expensive so we will have to send your car in to another workshop for 2 days to have the part fitted when it arrives ''
Of course i refused and was then told i could fit it at Reeds, but would have to wait for the part to be ordered and delivered, at such time i would be notified.
I drove my car in this state for 3 weeks (i was told it did not matter, but after researching, found that it is not healthy for the engine).
I was not contacted and decided to contact Reeds myself to find that the part was available. I immediately brought my car in to have the part fitted.
At this stage the salesperson that i was dealing with at Hyundai was unreachable due to personal reasons and when it was time to collect my vehicle, Reeds told me that they would not release it until Hyundai had paid. It was now about 17:30 and i had missed my appointment with my patient at an old age home. He was in a lot of pain and his family was very disappointed. Of course, i paid the outstanding labour fee of +/-1200 and was allowed to take my car for the weekend.
On top of all that, when starting my car, it sounded odd so i asked Reeds to check that out too and i was told that the battery failed the load test and needed to be replaced.
Coincidentally, earlier that week i had a tracking device installed.
That weekend my car battery died... In the rain. I had to jump/push start and managed to get the car back to Sea Point but the next day it was so dead that there was no way to start it.
Monday was a public holiday, so I contacted Hyundai on the Tuesday, first thing in the morning. I was told that a new battery would be installed on site the next day and i left my car keys with the building manager to sort it out.
I later called to find out that the battery was not dropped off. Their excuse was poor, something about a miscommunication. '' It will be sorted tomorrow (Thursday) ''
Meanwhile, i was making promises to the same patient in the old age home and having to cancel each time Hyundai did not fix the car they sold me less than a month ago. I was also spending a lot on ubers at this stage as i work in Claremont and Sea Point and my associate had injured himself and could not practice.
On Thursday, i was told by my building manager that Hyundai drove my car away without asking me. All my personal belongings were inside- including office keys for 2 practices and keys for 4 seperate properties.
This is considered theft if i am not mistaken and i could charge to replace all the locks on my doors??? In my car, I also carried personal documents and a key card for the parking at my office building which was a further inconvenience.
Before continuing, just to clarify, i had now incurred far more expenses than it would have cost to simply replace my battery.
My car was not returned on Thursday.
On Friday, i had to wait until the afternoon for Hyundai to tell me that they had decided not to take the blame and were blaming the tracking device that was installed by Tracker.
I argued and told them that Reeds had load tested the battery and found it faulty. I was very rudely told by Elric from Hyundai Milnerton that i cant prove it and he cant help me.
When i was finally able to get a hold of Tracker i was told that they would contact me in 3 days to schedule a technician appointment and there would be a call out fee of R550.
I let hyundai know and they told me ''not to worry, the battery was not at fault.''
At this stage i had lost patience, i was spending a lot on ubers, losing money in practice and harming relationships with patients whose appointments i was having to cancel each day. I asked hyundai to replace the battery but they would not because they wanted to blame tracker and did not want to remove the device.
I escalated my request for a technician with tracker by contacting Santam Insurance (who referred me to tracker).
On Monday, i was able to get the Tracker technician out to Hyundai and was informed that it was in fact the battery, not the tracker!
Hyundai did not apologize, they replaced the battery and left me to settle the tracker call out fee.
When contacting Hyundai the next day i was bluntly and once again, very rudely told by Elric from Bradley De Villiers at Hyundai Milnerton - Cape Town that they would only be covering the battery and nothing else:
The following few days, i re-attempted to make contact with Clinton who is superior to Elric, but i was laughed off by reception and other Hyundai employees. Each time i was told that he was busy and would call me back. I have these phone calls on record. He has never called me back.
I expect Hyundai to at least cover the cost of Tracker call out and the labour fee at Reeds to fit the part.
When buying a vehicle from a dealership, it should be in working condition? Consumer protection Act? I accept that things can go wrong but from a large company like Hyundai, one expects a battery fault to be recitified in less than 10 days. There was zero communication during that time, my car was taken without my consent and staff members were extremely rude.
Ive wasted enough time and energy now and i hope that i never have to deal with them again.
Unfortunately they have not yet delivered my new number plates (going on 2 months now)
