HP printer - bad support
Summary: When I scan multiple pages into PDF using the Web Scan option in an HP printer, the resultant PDF is not readable or printable. The problem seems to be present in other printers, as well.
Details:
I have an all-in-one printer HP Office Jet Pro 6830 ("HP Officejet Pro 6830 e-All-in-One Printer", Product Number: E3E02A), which has an automatic document feeder (ADF) and claims being able to handle multiple pages documents for both printing and scanning. The printer offers several options for scanning documents, such as from a PC, from the printer's own user interface, via a web page ("web scan"). The printer is still on warranty.
I most often use the web scan. The HP printer is unfortunately unable to do web page controlled scanning for multiple page documents. It completes the scan and allows to download and save the PDF document. However, this document cannot be opened properly or printed. When opening with a standard Adobe Acrobat Reader, one cannot scroll through the scanned document - this results in an error "There was an error while reading a stream".
I logged a case with HP. A technician attempted to assist me but closed the call prematurely: We performed scans, uninstalled the Acrobat Reader, reinstalled it anew, went to some HP support pages, installed a 3rd party application (FoxReader), shared the files with HP. Unfortunately, after spending some 2 hours of my time, he was not able to resolve the problem. He then promised to follow up with technical department. A few days later, the the call was just closed and the problem remains unresolved.
The problem seems to be in the firmware of this printer (at least, ) and also in other HP printers (e.g. https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-and-Copying/acrobat-there-was-an-error-reading-a-stream/td-p/ ********** talking about an HP Photosmart printer). The latter page claims to have solved the problem. However, no proof is provided.
For example, the pages https://forums.adobe.com/thread/ ********** and https://forums.adobe.com/thread/ ********** show that a similar problem existed for a Lexmark printer etc. and was resolved by updating firmware. HP needs to improve on its services.
