Hp 500 smart printer not working

Today 9 January i bought a samsung smart 500 tank printer. Hubby set it up. However it shows paper jam. How can a new printer keep on showing paper error if its never been used before and there are no traces of paper inside the machine. According to reviews it should be an easy process to set up this machine. However this has proven to be a night mare and a waste of my precious time and money. Can someone from HP please explain and assist.
